What are the " Nusayriyya"?

PostAuthor: Vladimir » Tue Apr 04, 2006 10:12 am

Recently I was reading an article called " Alevi Identity in Turkish Historiography" by Eran Livni. To my surprise I noted an remarkable remark. He said there is a " Nusayriyya" in Southeast-Turkey a.k.a Kurdistan.

Who are they?
The suppression of ethnic cultures and minority religious groups in attempting to forge a modern nation were not unique to Turkey but occurred in very similar ways in its European neighbours - Bruinessen.

I think it is related to Nusairi religion (Syrian alawî) which is different from Kurdish/Turkish Alevism. Most Nusairi are in Antakkya area, and in North West Syria (Jebel Alawî). Mist Nusaïri are Arabic, and not at all Muslims, as Alevi they rather to marry with Christians than with Sunnis.
