NPR: The Kangal is a national symbol of Turkey

PostAuthor: Vladimir » Tue May 16, 2006 1:13 am

National Public Radio (NPR) based in New york ran a feature on the Kangal dog calling it a "national symbol of Turkey". The report stated that the large white sheep dog from the cold mountains of Eastern Anatolia is a national symbol in Turkey, and that, "the Kangal is considered such an important cultural heritage that the Turkish government funds efforts to protect the breed."

The report went on to say that, "One of the myths about the big beast with the menacing bark is that it sprang from the union of a dog and a lion. Not true, of course, but adults weigh at least 140 pounds and were bred to fight wolves. Now they're so closely protected that to export a Kangal, you need a permit from the Turkish military."

I don't believe animals can be Turkish or Kurdish. But Kangals are living in Kurdish area's. Not Turkish ones.
The suppression of ethnic cultures and minority religious groups in attempting to forge a modern nation were not unique to Turkey but occurred in very similar ways in its European neighbours - Bruinessen.

I wonder if Armenians will claim it also. By the way, I think that dogs don't care. It reminds me that Turkey protested when Armenia put Ararat Mount on its national flag, for they say that "Ararat is in our land, not yours." And Armenians answered : "You have the moon on your flag, so what ?"

In any case, Kangal is only a "conventionnal" name. This breed of dogs is one of the most ancient in the history, they probably came with Indo Aryan from Central Asia and have a lot of cousins in Europe, all the great mountainer dogs, in fact. They had been employed in war, for fighting bears, lions and all great beasts, watching cities...

But they seem to be so sleepy and lazy that it is hard to imagine !

First of all... "Sivas" as you have just described it, is a Province, not a City - so Kengal is one of the towns in Sivas Province...

And Sivas city is the capital city of Sivas Province...

Anyway - point is - that Kengal actually is close to Zara - which is a Kurdish city...

And so is Kengal... Assimilated, sure - but ethnically Kurdish...
