Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli, bypassing the debate on fundamentalism, focused on remarks made by Erdogan earlier last week on the "Kurdish problem" and berated the premier, saying, "I'll make those who try to separate the sons of this country pay."

The suppression of ethnic cultures and minority religious groups in attempting to forge a modern nation were not unique to Turkey but occurred in very similar ways in its European neighbours - Bruinessen.
