The Minister of Human Rights of the Kurdistan regional government (KRG), Ihsan Nuri, has allegedly told the sister of the imprisoned Kurdish writer, Dr. Kamal Sayd Qadir, that the latter should rot and die in jail.

The Kurdistan News Agency, Kurdistanan.com, reported today that Awaz Sayd Qadir, the sister of Dr. Kamal Sayd Qadir has informed the Austrian Foreign Ministery that Dr. Kamal’s family had sent a delegation to the KRG’s Ministry of Human Rights in order to facilitate the release of the Kurdish writer.

According to Awaz Sayd Qadir, the KRG Human Rights Minister has refused to release Dr. Kamal Sayd Qadir and has said that “Dr. Kamal Sayd Qadir must stay in prison and rot there”.

Dr. Qadir is allegedly being held by the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) for writing articles critical of KDP officials, including KDP leader Massoud Barzani, the President of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Dr. Qadir, aged 48, was allegedly arrested on October 26 by members of Parastin, the security intelligence service of the KDP, because of articles he had published on the Internet in the weeks prior to his return to Iraqi Kurdistan. He has been detained incommunicado in Iraqi Kurdistan by the KDP ever since.

Is this possible? I find it hard to believe that any KRG official (let alone the Minister of Human Rights) would say that one of their prisoners should "rot in jail". Kurdistani.com should have perhaps checked the validity of this news before they published it. Seems like an excessive number of their recent reports have been none other than negatives for the KRG.

the kurdistani is not a trustable soruce at alll, they had a news that PUK had shooted ppl for protesting about rojhelat ...

but that news was completly untrue, I asked several ppl in slemani and all of them said that news is lie .

the kurdistani stuff have proved that they do EVERYYHING to get some attention,and therefore make some money on the advertisements, I am not gonna publish information about things they did because that would be a full article.
if i ever publish those information , you would say , these peopel are not qulified to be Media for Kurds.

They should not to destory picture of KRG , just to make some attention .

I doubt strongly that an Official would have made a such statement. I never heard KRG people talked like that.

Dr. Kemal wrote for kurdistanpost.. and his sister says that. She said more things before. Not the fault of TheKurdistani! They aren't saying KRG minister says he must rot in prison, but her sister !!

Anyway piling wrote this in roj bas: Men from hewler not anti-KDP : “He had really insulted Barzani, and here, it’s forbidden to insult anybody like he has done. So he will be judged as anybody. Now who could say that the court will be independant at 100%…”

Isn't Dr Kemal an Austrian citizicen? If so he cannot be judged by a court in Kurdistan.

Well I don't know the Kurdish Law but in any country, if you violate laws, you could be imprisonned, whatever your nationality. If a Kurdish citizens makes something illegal in Austria, I don't think that Austrian authorities let him free.

Moreover, I would like to read the "so-called personnal and private insultes" that Dr Kemal would have written, to examine them. But I did not see that it has been precisely mentionned anywhere.

Well it is not precisely MY story. But just the young men who narrated his travel in Holland on our French forum, has said today that he has heard that he was released. As he has friends from KDP (though he is personnaly neutral) I suppose that is his source. I asked him on the French forum to give us informations if he has more...

I could call KRG representative tomorrow, if I could reach him, I suppose he could confirm or not.

Yeah, but as a news source that several people visit a day, the Kurdistani needs to be a little bit more responsible. News reports like this will affect a lot of people. If someone were to call the NY Times tomorrow and make up some story, the NY Times would never publish it until they could verify that it was true with a few other sources. The Kurdistani does not seem to take these measures.

Dr. Kamal has not been released and I suspect such a report is merely propaganda.

On 16th December 2005, Dr Said Qadir wrote a letter from his detention centre in Arbil, Southern Kurdistan’s capital, which was published on a number of Kurdish websites. “Oppression is one of the main features of human history… I have now become a small sample of this oppression, deprivation and violation of my very basic rights as a human since I have been detained. I was arrested by a group of armed people on 23rd October 2005 in Arbil. I was kidnapped without being asked for my name, what I have been accused of or where they were taking me. And to date, I still have no idea who issued a warrant of my arrest.”

“Regarding my case, a most basic principal of law has not been honoured. For a while I did not even have any legal representatives. Then someone visited me, known as Nejad Mufti. The solicitor visited me when I was in a room that had a distinct smell of urine. He talked on behalf of the party [KDP], and asked me to sign an agreement to act on my behalf. Although I signed the agreement, I’m not really sure how they use this agreement and for whom this solicitor works.

This solicitor visited me once again for one minute, when my health was drastically degrading due to my prolonged hunger strike in prison. I declare now that I denounce this solicitor. He has not been my solicitor from day one up to now. And I have not accepted him as my solicitor.

In relation to investigation by a judge, in the early stages it was more black humour than a just investigation. For example, I asked him to contact the Austrian embassy. He told me that I have an arrest warrant from the Austrian authorities too.”

He had posted a number of articles on KM before and shortly after the war started, and when I saw his picture, I remembered he had written for KM, but under a different name. . . for good reason, as his incommunicado detention proves.

This is not the way to run a de facto independent state. The KDP must be held accountable for this. Just as the Ba'ath must be held accountable for their crimes.
