ANKARA - TDN with wire services

A Turkish teenager whose brother died of bird flu succumbed to the disease on Thursday, a Turkish doctor said. If confirmed, the brother and sister will be the first human cases of the H5N1 strain in Turkey, as the virus moves westward from the far-eastern corner of Asia.

Guenael Rodier, a special adviser on communicable diseases at the World Health Organization's (WHO) European headquarters in Copenhagen, said tissue samples from the brother were tested by two laboratories in Turkey and that "it turned out to be positive [for H5N1], and because it's so specific it's unlikely that we're dealing with false positives." Additional specimens are now on their way to centers in Britain, where the initial test results will be checked, Rodier told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

The victims, who hail from the small eastern town of Doğubeyazit, lived in the same household as infected chickens and ate the birds after they were slaughtered as a result of exhibiting signs of bird flu. The siblings were hospitalized last week after developing a high fever, coughing and bleeding in their throats.

Five more people were hospitalized on Thursday with similar symptoms, said Hüseyin Avni Şahin, head physician at the hospital. In all, 14 patients were or are being treated at the hospital.

"Some just came in because they were in contact [with fowl] and they were scared," Şahin told reporters outside the hospital, which was closed to visitors.

Health Minister Recep Akdağ on Thursday had ruled out the possibility of an "epidemic" of bird flu.

"We do not expect it [the disease] to spread to a lot of people. We are not expecting an epidemic in Turkey," Akdağ told CNN-Türk.

"There is a risk involved for families and their children who are in close contact with winged animals in unhygienic environments," Akdağ said.

Considering the way of life of Kurdish poors and the difficult situation of many people in Northern Kurdistan, it could be terrible if epidemy spreads...

by the way I dont know why america medias in farsi , call those who died Turk. I dont know why America Medias in Farsi insist on using the word Turk that much.

yesterday in the East of the dear Turkey , the darling model of democarcy , two TURK children died, and the Turk Doctor said, we will heal these Turk Children in the Turkish Hospital ,because we have Turkish doctors to heal these Turk children, ....every Turk in turkey is ok, because we are model of the democracy for the whole history..... and our main problem is terroists.... we are turk

Qouted from Radio Farda, (with a bit change  )

turk turk turk turk.........stop using that word, God Damn America Medias.
I hate American Medias when it comes to turkey.

I hope the epidemy goes to west of turkey... hopefully it will kill 2-3 million turks and make it easier for American Medias to repeat the word turk...as they liket that word so much ... and also make it easier for kurds to reach to their rights(kidding)

By the way, much journalists don't know where is Dogubeyazit, just that it is in Turkish so they say "turk".

And most of news for AFP are written by Anatolia agency in Ankara, so they don"t write "Kurdish" too much...

Dyako... THAT is a GREAT idea! We SHOULD make SURE that it goes to Turkish Turkey - so that they are paralized for a LONG time - and then - while they are trying to save their asses - the Liberated Kurdistanî Pêshmerge can work with the Gêrîlas in North to liberate North Kurdistan! 8)

Now the epidemy reaches Ankara. But be sure it won't stop to Turkish border. In Europe, as in Iran, birds fly...

I've red that some ppl in Northern Kurdistan could not understand very well the official advices in TV concerning the good way to protect from the flu and avoid birds' contact, for they don't understand Turkish very well... But of course, no Turkish politicians could ask to make Kurdish advertisement.

If I were Roj TV leaders, I would broadcast statements to warn ppl, and explain how to protect them from flu. It would be the better way to show in the world that Kurds need to have their own media, and to show to Turkey that where Turkish can't reach ppl, Kurdish is more efficient 8)

I don't contact them precisely because I don't watch them ! then I don't know if they've changed or not since MED TV... but that's right that I have no great sympathy for PKK...

In any case, it is better if someone who watches and knows well the broadcast write to them.

The most important thing is cleanliness. And be aware of birds  .
The best way to avoid birdflu.

But the sickness's 4th stage will be spreading ppl to ppl.And there is no cure against this sickness. And when we think it has gone,it can start show again.

We need more regular and more clean environment ,don't we?Of course there is precautions against this sickness. But i think this sickness will be very important sickness of this age.And it seems it will spread Europe and all countries in the world by the time.

Just cleaning is very important.

And especially to avoid close contacts with birds. For example, the family of the 2 children died let their chickens sleeping in their house because of cold night. I undersdtand they are afraid to lost their chickens for they are poor and it was their way to eat, but it was a mistake of the Turkish government to have not warn people before. Last summer, thousands of birds died in the Lake of Van, then the flu is in the area since summer !

I've read that the strategy and the experience of Vietnam could be very useful for thay have faced the same problem last year, and they have a poor population of peasants too, so the same ground.
