Turkish-Kurdish intermarriage

Data from the Turkish Demographic and Health Surveys are used to study Turkish–Kurdish intermarriage in contemporary Turkey. We find a strong tendency to marry within the own ethnic group (or towards ‘ethnic homogamy’) which, however, has decreased significantly between the early 1960s and the late 1990s. So, in spite of the conflict in south-eastern Turkey, the groups seem to have grown together somewhat in recent decades. This result remains intact if we control for the difference in group size between the groups and for the presence of educational homogamy. An individual-level analysis shows that most Turkish–Kurdish intermarriage takes place between Kurdish males and Turkish females and that both Turks and Kurds intermarry more in the large cities and in regions where their own group is small. With regard to education, the highest intermarriage tendencies are found among Turks with a low educational level and among Kurds with a high educational level. This finding is in line with social exchange theory.

I have two nephews (living in Germany) married to turkish girls... at least i can say they arent educated themselves :)

But generally speaking for the kurds in the article... i think its a shame, they must be kind of ashamed of their origins and think marrying a turk will bring them to a higher standard. I wouldnt marry a turk for numerous reasons.

Yes-----> You are right about all you've said Abdur...

They think they'll be "upgraded" from their "backward Kurdishness" if they marry Turks - because now - they are "educated" and must find somebody who is their "equal" - and Kurdish girls are just too dumb to marry... So they must find a "smart" and "sophisticated" Turkish girl...

Did the article say they are "educated Kurds"??? Seem pretty stupid to me...

Abdur - what are your reasons for not marrying a Turkish girl?

But i just want a koerdish one.. because if u marrie a turkish one.. and there is something about kurds on the tv they will talk bad about all the kurds.. without realizing that she/he is also talking bout u and ur family at that moment..

blabla.. kurd û kurd bashteren.. çinko ji hevdo fém diken ( ser kurdistané ) û wek heven.

In Norwegian we have a saying:

Like barn leker best! :D

"Same children play best"

In e.g. - children who are the same - play best together... :P

I wouldn't marry a Turk, Persian or Arab unless they were assimilated into Kurds! :P :P :P

It isn't talking about Kurds in the diaspora, but about Kurds in North-Kurdistan/Turkey. The report also concludes that there are not much interethnicmarriages, although they are increasing.

According to the article this is partly due the 'low education level of women, who only can speak Kurdish'. Solution is Turkification of the Kurdish women by education in Turkish...sadly.

That's the problem of being a "minority". The article suggest that Kurdish women get Turkish education. Henche there is no Kurdish education, I am not suprised... :? .

i think the one who has written this article is a bit pro turk ,

he wanted to say educated kurds like to be assimulated !

well those edcuated kurds who want to be assimulated , may be dont have a better Brain than kurds who marry kurds , but just Turkish School Degrees.

I think kurdish-turkish marriage helps assimuation .

as diri said, I wouldnt marry a turk arab persian, unless she admits that my childern must speak Kurdish and she herself try to be a kurd.

You have to learn Turkish, if you want to improve your economical position. You know Persian too right? It doesn't necessarely mean you are assimilated . It depends on your use of Kurdish language.

Intermarriages are natural process. How many European people are married with Turks, black Africans, (from Africa, Suriname), northern Africans, Kurds, Pakistani, Hindu people, Chinese, Indonesian people etc. But after all those people will be assimilated into European people/race and will disappear. Same is with Turks and Arabs in Kurdistan. Those people will learn Kurdish and will become Kurds and will disappear among us. We’re with 40 million Kurds. A couple of thousand foreigners will not change Kurdisness among Kurds. Hell even 1 million foreigners will not change Kurds.

Remember that, in Germany, Holland, France etc. live relatively more people from other country than in Kurdistan!

It's not marriage which makes assimilation, it is political and social domination. If you marry someone who belongs to a dominant group, your children will join your husband or wife's group. If you belong to the dominating group then you'll win. If you are migrant, Turk or Kurd, your children will be probably more related with the country where they grew than with their relatives' origin.

Where is written that millions Kurds and Turksare are married with eachother.

In Germany live more than 2,1 million Turks!

"Around 7.3 million foreigners live in Germany (11,2 percent of the total population)"

http://www.serve.com/shea/gerks.htm

So much foreigners don't live in Kurdistan!

How many black Africans live in France? About 10% are foreigners (6 mil. out of 60 mil.) And maybe more.

Spain?

How many Indonesians, Surinamese, Chinese, Turks, Moroccans live in Holland.

How many Pakistani live in England?

Because of previous war(s) and dangers in Kurdistan no foreigner wants to live Kurdistan. That’s why relatively (in percentage) in Kurdistan live less foreigners than in Turkye, Arab countries, Europe, etc. . Even with ‘lost’ cities like Mosul and some other in Turkye with very high Turkish population.

And most intermarriages are happening not in Kurdistan, but in big cities in Turkye, Europe atc.

And Kurds reproduce more children than Turks, so it's not a problem for us to handle Turkssss. And in Europe it’s a bigger problem since foreigners reproduce more children than native European population.

Argggh, don't remind me of this! I know this feeling well, it happened to me thousands of times to watch tv/news with Kurds and then they started swearing at my culture/ country /people /family...and the only thing I can do is blushing and look at the floor! (anyway...I am a still Kurdophile, forever! :D )
