Dear friends,

As you may have heard it recently in the News that the Education minister of So. Kurdistan has recommend to use Sorani dialect to be the official dialect (language) used in schools, and government offices in So. Kurdistan. Since the beautiful Kurdish language consist of several beautiful dialects spoken by 40 million Kurds. I think this is a very premature idea or decision to make considering 75% or more of the Kurds speak Kirmanci, Zazaki, Gorani dialects. Such initiative will promote division among the Kurds...The Kurdish politicians have to be more careful in making comments or decision of this sort. This decisions should be left for linguists and researchers.

Zazayi speakers are not much in Southern Kurdistan, lol.

but there is still kurmanci, hewrami in southenrn kurdistan, and more imporatntly is goverment responsibility to protect all kurdsih dialect from verge of exteinction.

Behdinanî is not threatened of extinction in Southern Kurdistan.
The issue of a common and official language for a state is complex and should be debated out of passion. (By the way, this law seems to be an episode of the rivalry between behdinanî/soranî in Southern Kurdistan...)

Presently, a citizen of the Region of Kurdistan has 2 official languages : Arab and Kurdish, as an Iraqi citizen, and a Kurdistanî citizen.

Within the Region of Kurdistan, I think that behdinanî and soranî could be both official languages inside the Kurdish regions.

But then we are going to have complains of Turkish, Arab and Syriac speakers, for their own languages become also an "official" language.

Then the problem could be resolved in different ways : Having a single or two "official" languages, and many other regional diaclects, with a status, like in Germany or in Italia.

Or adapted the concept of "Languages of France" could be interested as Baskin Oran explained it to his judges:

Concept of “Langues de France”

Article 2 of the French Constitution is as follows: “The language of the Republic is French”.

This much should be pleasing for the Prosecution because it reminds us the statement of “Its language is Turkish” in article 3/1 of our Constitution, referring to the Turkish State.

However there is in France something else that the Prosecution does not know and would not be pleased to know: The concept of “Les Langues de France”. If we had that concept in Turkey it would be “Languages of Turkey”.

The public institution [1] under the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, and which was previously known as “Délégation Générale à la langue française” and changed into “Délégation Générale à la langue française et aux langues de France” in October 16th, 2001 defines this concept a :

“Concept of “Languages of France” refers to regional or minority languages traditionally spoken by French citizens in the Land of the Republic, and which are not official languages of any other state.”

The number of these regional and minority languages is more than 75 including the Overseas Lands. Number of those in the Metropolitan France only is 16 and they are divided into “Regional Languages” and “Non-territorial languages”.

There are 10 “Regional” Languages of France: Alsacien, Basque, Breton, Catalan, Corsican, Western Flemish, Moselle Francique, Francoprovencial, Languages of Oïl, Languages of Oc (occitan) [Alsacien, basque, breton, catalan, corse, flamand occidental, francique mosellan, francoprovençal, langues d’oïl, parlers d’oc ou occitan.]

There are 6 “non-territorial” languages; Dialectal Arabic, Western Armenian, Berbère, Judeo-Spanish, Roman (gypsy), Yiddish (Jewish) [arabe dialectal, arménien occidental, berbère, judéo-espagnol, romani, yiddish.] [2]

It is completely free to speak, write, publish, produce arts etc. in these languages.

“Deixonne” Law on Teaching Local Languages and Dialects effected in 1951 stipulated that education in Breton, Basque, Catalan and Occitan was permitted (article 10) and the said Law also identified the universities where these languages could be subject of education and research (article 11).

Or to give to kurmancî and soranî the same bilateral status than Alsacian (German dialect) and French in regions of Alsace-Moselle as Oran exposed it after.

But I think that giving the status of OFFICIAL languages to all Kurdish dialects, even if there are not spoken in the Region of Southern Kurdistan is a bit unrealistic.

well pilling according to Christen Allison you may know her well ,she had conference in Sweden just recently according to her Kurmanci is in danger and kurds may lose it in last 30 years.
now let forget about phoney Iraq and its fake constitution which will never implemented anyway, Iraq is just is gone is just Bagdad green zone, to be more realistic, according to this phone paper even Kurdish is official language Iraq, however Arabs never heard of it, and never will do. So the question is why Kurds fooling themselves putting Arabic in southern Kurdistan while ignoring their own dialect.
considering Musil area, kurmanci speakers are almost equalent to sorani in some extent, so Kurmanci must remain as official languge in south along side sorani.
I believe STH.Kurdistan instead having Arabic language they should put kurmanci as official language as same statue as soranii. and I don’t believe we have to mix such dialect even in near future because kurmanci have its own uniquality is pour real Kurdish, as well as sorani, but with such rich dialect we can get ride of Turkic Arabic Persians words replaced with other dialect words.

Where ? In Southern Kurdistan or in North ?

Concerning the status of Arab in Kurdistan, for the moment, as Kurdistan is not still independant, it should accept the Iraqi Constitution above its own Constitution. If one day, there is an independant Kurdistan, nothing could prevent that soranî and kurmancî become both official languages of Kurdistan.

well I may have be wrong , please see her script was all over Kurdish site,
I believe she was concerning both parts south and north. In north she mentioned danger that Kurds can not adopted themselves in daily life to communicate in Kurdish, and they talking to their children in Turkish even in Diaspora, and in south she critic of Kurdistan government policy that kurmanci going to soranized and vanised. i may be wrong please check but i know she metioend danger of Kurmanci in both part.
And if that is case i itotally agree and is real concern need urgent action from all parts of Kurdistan.

For Turkey that is entirely true. For Syria, the danger is when Kurds inhabit definitively in Arab cities or Arab quarters, slowly they forget Kurdish, but most of them talk it fluently.

Concerning the soranization of kirmancî, well perhaps, though I constate that Behdinanî people speak a very good Kurdish, infinitely better than in Turkey ! Probably there will be an influence each other, but it is better that speaking "turdish" like in Turkey.

In some mixed areas like Hewlêr, most of Soran understand behdinanî, but Silêmanî people, not at all.

People from Bahdinan and other kirmancî areas should learn their own language at school, but should learn soranî also. After all, Turkmens and Assyrians in their own schools do the same : they are bilingual.
