TIKRIT,— Salahuddin Province announced, on Thursday, that it began distributing support forms for the province’s declaration as a region. Signatures will be presented to the electoral commission to carry out next steps stipulated by the Iraqi constitution, Salahuddin explained stressing that turning Salahuddin into a federal region is an irreversible public demand.
“The distribution of forms to gather signatures of about 2% of voters for the referendum of Salahuddin Region’s declaration began on Thursday,” Salahuddin Province MP Abdul Karim Al Jabbar told a press conference, in Samarra on Thursday, on the sidelines of a major mass celebration in the event of US withdrawal from Iraq.
It is required, by virtue of Law 21/2008 for regions, to gather support of 2% of voters in the event that the ministerial council does not approve to transfer the demand to the Independent High Electoral Commission within 15 days of the official request.
“Special commissions were created for this purpose in Salahuddin’s districts and areas,” Karim declared indicating that these commissions started gathering voters’ signatures in the province. “This procedure will end within two days,” he explained.
“Gathered signatures will be presented to Salahuddin’s electoral commission to carry out next steps stipulated by Iraqi constitution,” Karim explained assuring another time that the region is an irreversible public demand.
The idea to establish regions in Iraq isn’t quite mature yet, Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki said in a special interview with Alsumaria, on December 8. Balad,www.ekurd.net Dujail and Samarra districts should be affiliated to Baghdad as per Iraqi President’s planning, Maliki concluded.
