Iraqiya to declare alliance with Kurds soon, says MP

BAGHDAD, May 12 (AKnews) - Iraqiya List will soon declare it will join forces with the Kurdistan Blocs Coalition to counter the "unilateralist" rule, said an Iraqiya MP.

"The coming days will witness the announcement of a new alliance. Iraqiya is heading towards a strategic alliance with the Kurdistan Blocs Coalition (KBC)," said Talal al-Zubayee.

Zubayee said his bloc has already began "practical and serious talks" with the KBC to counter "the unilateralism and persistence in ruling and bullying with the army."

Kurdish MPs refuted the reports over alliance between Iraqiya and KBC, which count as the second and third largest entities in the Iraqi House of Representatives. The reports added that some ranks within the National Alliance are also a part of the new coalition.

The news was circulated after Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani began to object to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in the media.

Zubayee said that the Iraqiya List has formed a high committee to set up the procedures and agenda for the new coalition.

Maliki', who leads the State of Law Coalition (SLC), is embattled on two fronts: Iraqiya List and Kurdistan Region government. The tensions between Iraqiya and SLC date stem from the previous elections and those of government to some deep-rooted administrative issues that arose even before Maliki's terms.

So far, four Iraqi politicians have directly or indirectly accused Maliki of acting like a "dictator": Barzani, Ayad Allawi who leads Iraqiya, Muqtada al-Sadr, leader of Sadrist Current, and deputy PM Saleh Mutlag.

The latter was fired after making the accusation but now seems to have been restored to his position.

During a meeting in Erbil almost 10 days ago Allawi, Barzani, Sadr and Iraqi House Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi set a 15 day deadline for Maliki to "comply with the political agreement," or they will withdraw their confidence in the government.

Maliki in turn warned that he would suspend working with the constitution, dissolve the government and arrange for early elections.

They need us much more than we need them , so unless they are willing to resolve Kirkuk issue and other disputed area we should not bother with such alliance . Lets us not forget that just few months ago they were the fiercest opposition to Kurds

They will never accept that.

I really dont understand why Barzani think that a alliance with the Sunnis is better than a alliance with the Shias.

i think the disputed areas is more in the hands of the sunnis rather than the shias , in many meetings the shias always say to kurds "the disputed areas are between you and the sunnis so you best to speak with them".

but yeah such alliance should be based on resolving all of the disputed areas that are currently under Kurdish control .

No the shias have the power, if they want, they can implement Articel 140. But they dont do it, mybe because they want to provoke a dispute between sunnis and kurds.

I hope that Maliki understand now that this does not work. Hes attitude only push the Kurds and Sunnis to form a coalition.

I personally think it is not to late for a agreement between Kurds and Shias, but for that Maliki must start to implement his promisses, now he see what will happen if he dont do it.

forget him , he is only doing what iran desires so no they will never do that , in an interview with nrttv he said "we will never ever be able to implement article 140 until the administrative boundaries are restored and re-drawn to their previous status of 1968". \

so now we have to make the sunnis and iraqiya agree to this since they have done all this mess and they will be the prime losers , well technically they are not since they sliced off parts from kurdistan and the shia region and annexed them to the sunni region.

indeed, very good point alan.

The whole issue with provincial boundaries concerns not just Kirkuk/Kurdistan. In the south, massive chunks were removed from Shia provinces and allocated to "sunni arab" provinces... like 95% of Karbala province as one "minor" example, and about 40% of Wasit province to Diyala as another...

maliki can't even "help his fellow shias" let alone implement anything for the kurds!

He can if he want. The provincial boundaries are not so important for the shias, because they are the majority in whole Iraq. They block the normalisation because of the Kurds.

actually it is important for the shias. Large chunks of Wasit given to Diyala under Sunni-Arab control who are extremely anti-shia. Also a huge chunk of Anbar actually was part of Karbala (about 45% of anbar was part of Karbala before 1991). But due to the way government is structured and the fear of a new civil war, they keep shtum.
