As you see, the recent quakes are taking place on well known fault-lines and hopefully will not spread further

However, people living on the fault line should be made aware of the possibility of quakes within the near future

With temperatures around freezing, the most URGENT need is for shelter and heating

Warm food and clean water are also extremely important

BEWARE

Many so-called charities and organizations will be asking for donations to help the earthquake victims

MOST of them are FAKE

I recommend:

Médecins Sans Frontières

Syria-Turkey earthquake: What is MSF doing?

On Monday 6 February, two major earthquakes hit northwest Syria and southeast Turkey.

Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) teams have been responding in northern Syria since the first hours of the disaster.

In Idlib, in northern Syria, we are treating injured patients in MSF-supported hospitals

Our teams have also donated emergency medical kits to other healthcare facilities in the region

We remain in close contact with authorities in northwest Syria and in southern Turkey in order to provide support based on the emerging needs of people affected by the earthquake

MSF teams and their families are reported to be OK and we are in constant contact
The situation is extremely fast-moving. More information on MSF's response to the earthquake will be shared as it becomes available.

How can I help MSF in Syria and Turkey?

Due to the unique way that MSF is funded, most of our donations are "unrestricted" and can be used wherever the need is greatest. The actions our teams are taking in Syria and Turkey are funded by donations just like these.

Please consider giving an unrestricted donation, which will give our medical teams across the world the valuable flexibility to respond as needs arise.

Worst earthquakes today were:

Today: 6.0 magnitude earthquake near Göksun, Kahramanmaraş, Turkey

Today: 6.0 magnitude earthquake near Doğanşehir, Malatya, Turkey

Today: 7.5 magnitude earthquake near Celeyke, Kahramanmaraş, Turkey

Today: 6.7 magnitude earthquake near Kahramanmaraş, Turkey

Today: 7.8 magnitude earthquake near Nurdağı, Gaziantep, Turkey

Plus numerous smaller quakes

Many buildings will remain unsafe

Many countries offering help

Not much in the way of action

By the time most countries finish making decisions on what action to take, many of those trapped or injured will have already lost their lives

Turkish 1999 earthquake:
    17,000 lives were lost
Multiple structures were reportedly destroyed by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 that struck Turkey, followed by another significant quake felt in various provinces in the area

It was located around 33 kilometres (20 miles) from Gaziantep and about 26 kilometres (16 miles) from the town of Nurdagi, according to the US Geological Survey. The United States Geological Survey placed the epicentre at a depth of 18 kilometres (11 miles).

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management organisation was headquartered in Pazarcik, in Kahramanmaras province. Information on casualties and property loss from this devastating earthquake is still being confirmed.

However, just 23 years ago, Turkey was rocked by an earthquake that killed 17,000 people and caused over 500,000 people to lose their homes. The devastating earthquake struck near Izmit, Turkey on August 17, 1999. Kocaeli and Gölcük are also other names for the earthquake.

North Anatolian fault system's northernmost strand was the epicentre of the earthquake, which happened just after 3:00 AM local time. The epicentre was located roughly 11 kilometres (7 miles) to the southeast of Izmit. Initially, there was a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that lasted for less than a minute. On August 19, around 50 miles (80 km) west of the first epicentre, there were two mild aftershocks.

Thousands of structures, including the Turkish naval headquarters in Gölcük and the Tüpraş oil refinery in Izmit, fell or were severely damaged, resulting in the deaths of about 17,000 people and the displacement of an estimated 500,000 more. Gölcük, Derince, Darca, and Sakarya (Adapazar) all reported high numbers of casualties. Hundreds of lives were lost and buildings were destroyed in Istanbul, located farther to the west.

The rescue and relief operation was led by the Turkish Red Crescent and the Turkish military, with the assistance of several foreign charity organisations. As a result of Greece's quick response, tensions in the country's often tense relationship with its neighbour have subsided.

Most of the deaths were from residential building collapses, therefore there was a lot of public anger directed at private contractors, who were blamed for bad craftsmanship and utilising cheap, unsuitable materials.

Many contractors were charged with crimes, but only a small fraction were found guilty. Officials who had not strictly enforced building rules to ensure earthquake-proof construction were also widely criticised.

23m people including 1.4m children likely to have been affected by earthquake

Adelheid Marschang, World Health Organization (WHO) senior emergency officer, has said about 23 million people, including 1.4 million children, were likely to be exposed in both countries following the earthquake and its aftershocks that reduced thousands of buildings to rubble.

Marschang said Turkey had a strong capacity to respond to the crisis but that the main unmet needs in the immediate and medium term would be across the border in Syria, already grappling with a years-long humanitarian crisis due to the civil war and a cholera outbreak.

“This is a crisis on top of multiple crises in the affected region,” she said at the organisation’s board meeting in Geneva. “All over Syria, the needs are the highest after nearly 12 years of protracted, complex crisis, while humanitarian funding continues to decline.”

The WHO said it was dispatching emergency supplies, including trauma and emergency surgical kits, and activating a network of emergency medical teams.

“It’s now a race against time,” said the WHO director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “Every minute, every hour that passes, the chances of finding survivors alive diminishes.”

He said the WHO was especially concerned about areas of Turkey and Syria from where no information had emerged since Monday’s earthquake. “Damage mapping is one way to understand where we need to focus our attention,” he said.

Erdoğan imposes three-month state of emergency on 10 Turkish provinces affected by quake

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has declared as a disaster zone the 10 provinces affected by the devastating earthquakes in southern Turkey, imposing a state of emergency in the region for three months.

In a speech, Reuters reports that the Turkish president said on Tuesday that 70 countries had offered help in search and rescue operations and that Turkey planned to open up hotels in the tourism hub of Antalya, to the west, to temporarily house people affected.

He said the death toll in Turkey had risen to 3,549 people, raising the combined death toll in Turkey and Syria to 5,151.

24,400 people involved in Turkish search and rescue, 5,775 buildings confirmed collapsed

Turkey has deployed more than 24,400 search and rescue personnel to the quake area, and has confirmed that 5,775 buildings have collapsed.

Thousands more buildings are unstable and may need demolition

The number of personnel was expected to rise with the arrival of additional people, though the wintry conditions were hampering their deployment, disaster management agency official Orhan Tatar said Tuesday.

Associated Press reports that Tatar said his agency had received 11,342 reports of collapsed buildings, but only 5,775 of those reports have been confirmed.

About 55 helicopters had conducted 154 sorties to transport emergency aid and around 85 trucks were distributing food, he said.

“The adverse weather conditions continue in the region. Therefore, from time to time it may be difficult to transport these search and rescue teams to the region,” he added. Temperatures overnight in the quake-hit city of Gaziantep sank to -5C (23F).

Last quake / aftershock was 3 hours ago, hopefully the area has calmed down
