US-led Airstrikes Intensified in Mosul
The US-led coalition against the Islamic State (IS) has intensified its airstrikes against the jihadists group inside their stronghold of Mosul in northern Iraq, Commander of Nineveh Operation confirmed.
Iraqi military official, Najm al-Jabouri, said that the number of coalition airstrikes against IS positions inside Mosul and on the southern outskirt of the city has significantly been increased, and the extremists have been inflected with heavy damages recently.
He pointed out that the airstrikes are mainly targeting IS headquarters where the jihadist commanders are supposedly gathering.
While some US and Iraqi officials previously claimed the start of the Mosul operation, Jabouri insists that they have not yet essentially attacked IS to re-claim Mosul. “But we are ready to move on the city any time the Iraqi PM orders to attack,” he added.
However, the Iraqi army, in cooperation with the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, have recently stationed over 4,500 Iraqi troops on the Makhmour frontline in southwest Erbil, saying that they are preparing the ground for a major operation to re-take Mosul from IS.
