Erbil Sports Club (Kurdish: یانەی وەرزشی هەولێر‎‎) is a sports club based in the city of Erbil, Kurdistan . The club is also known as Hewlêr, the Kurdish name for Erbil.

For the first time in its history, Erbil became champions of the Premier League after beating Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya (1–0) in the final game on Friday, July 6, 2007.

On 24 August 2008 Erbil retained their status as Premier League champions with a well-deserved win over Baghdad based Al-Zawraa. On 16 July 2009 Erbil became the champion of super league for the third consecutive year after beating Najaf FC. Overall they are the 9th team to win the Premier League.

Erbil Sport Club is the first Iraqi-Kurdish team to qualify for the Asian Champions League and the Arab Champions League. In 2009 they will take part in the AFC Cup for the first time in their history alongside Al-Zawraa. Erbil SC is the first Kurdish team to get players from outside.

yeah unofficial in 1940 . it was officially founded in 68 .

Erbil FC to face Kelantan in Asian Football league

ERBIL, June 14 (AKnews) - Erbil football club will face Malaysia's Kelantan club in the quarter-final matches of the Asian Football Confederation Cup in Malaysia.

The draw for the quarter-final matches was conducted today at the confederation's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

The matches are as follows:

Erbil (Iraq) vs Kelantan (Malaysia)
Kuwait (Kuwait) vs Wehdat (Jordan)
Arema (Indunisia) vs Ettifaq (Saudi Arabia)
Chonburi (Thailand) vs Shorta (Syria)

The matches will be organized in home and away games. Erbil will play against Kelantan on September 18 in a home match and will visit Malaysia for a second match on September 25. The winner of these two matches will face the winner of the Jonpori vs Shorta matches.

Wow, what a draw, finally we will easily go to the Finals and win the asian football league trophy. Hopefully, this will be the best year for Kurdish sports. Also, if Erbil goes to the final, they will compete in the Asian champions league next year.

How come other teams don't need to win the asian cup but still can play the champions league?

Since Iraq didn't met any of the AFC standards for the ACL, its clubs participated at the AFC Cup from 2009 on.

Basically, every country is allowed 2 or 3 teams to go straight to the champions league, but because iraq hasn't met the standards even the iraqi champion (Erbil) have to play in the asian league. So, this way, the only way they can get into the champions league is by winning the asian league and in this way FIFA cant say anything. However, everything will hopefully be fixed if iraq completes those Basra stadiums and reconstruct their national stadium.
