Often the writing and photography that win Pulitzer Prizes require heroic efforts on the part of journalists. For one recipient this year, the process of receiving the award also took an enormous effort

In 1979, a photographer stood nearby as executioners shot Kurdish prisoners in Sanandaj, Iran. A picture he took for an Iranian newspaper was picked up by United Press International and published worldwide. To protect the photographer, his name was not printed.

But the image proved so compelling that it was awarded the 1980 Pulitzer Prize for spot news photography. It was the first and still the only time that the Pulitzer, the highest honor in print journalism, has been given to an anonymous winner.

Khomeini spoke clear language as early as 1979!

Right from the beginning, when the Islamic Republic was founded, the message of Khomeini was not hidden. He said it openly and clearly - which today is a historical testimony to the true nature of the regime.

Khomeini's own words, 1979:

"We want to take our young people out of the theaters, make them free from pleasure and give them weapons.

We want our young people to go to the war front.

Islam has always advanced through blood, swords and weapons.

That's how Islam has been spread.

You call us backward hustlers.

Yes — you are the so-called 'roshenfekr' (the literate, the intellectuals) who don't want us to foster our young people to go back 1400 years in history.

But we say to you: our young people destroyed two great empires — and they can do it again. ”

This was not a rhetorical exaggeration or a temporary outplay.

It was the core of the ideology that shaped the Islamic Republic — an ideology built on violence, war and militarization of society.

To understand these words is to understand why today's Iran looks the way it does — 45 years later.

After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, a sharp and bloody conflict situation quickly emerged in the Kurdish regions of northwestern Iran.

The Kurdish groups, who have long fought for recognition, autonomy and cultural rights, were confronted by the new Islamic republic with brutal repression.

The government's response was far from meeting the people's demands for democracy and self-government — instead, extensive mass executions of young Kurds were carried out in cities such as Pawe, Saqez, Mariwan and Sanandaj.

This was part of a systematic strategy to crush the resistance through military violence and terror.
