PUK Roadmap Under Construction

PostAuthor: Aslan » Sun Oct 06, 2013 7:53 pm

SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region – An upcoming report by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) will address its leadership crisis and the defeat in last month’s parliamentary elections, and will include a roadmap for the future, the party spokesman said.

“The report will not only focus on the results of the elections,” Azad Jundiani said on the party’s website, “It will also include a roadmap for the future.”

The PUK has been in shock since the September 21 polls, where the giant party that is a ruling partner in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) was routed by the novice and breakaway Change Movement (Gorran).

Also, the PUK has been leader-less since Jalal Talabani, who is also Iraq’s president, suffered a stroke last December and was flown to Germany.

According to Jundiani, a three-man team led by senior PUK official and former parliamentary speaker Adnan Mufti have been tasked to prepare this report.

After receiving only 17.8 percent of the votes, PUK leaders announced they “respect the people’s will and decision,” and therefore accept the election results. Meanwhile, they announced plans for reform and a reshuffle of top posts.

Jundiani said that he and the rest of the team preparing the report will take into account everything that has been said or published about the PUK in the media. He said “reports that we have received from our members from inside or outside the country” also will be studied.

“We have benefited from interviews that we have conducted on the phone or in person,” Jundiani said. “We are also using the comments of non-PUK intellectuals and even our rivals.”

“We are preparing a structure and roadmap to put before the political bureau,” said Jundiani about the report. He added that the PUK has numerous internal, strategic and tactical issues to tackle.

“But chief among them is the crisis of leadership,” he said. “The findings of the report will be acted upon by the leadership council.”

The PUK needs a new leader, Talabni is lost, even if he not dead, he can not come back because of is age and his health. After they elect a new leader, they will get many of the votes back. Now they still have the opportunity to form the government with the PDK. The alliance between the PDK and PUK is still important, this alliance united south Kurdistan and it brought stability, hopefully this alliance will continue.

PUK needs a young leader, with a young and popular leader they will easily win against Gorran, because if the PUK elects a new leader, Gorran will be the one with the oldest leader, their leader Mustafa is over 70 years old and very weak, he don't held many meeting during the election campaign and acted very slow. And in the next parliamentary elections he will even be over 75 years old. And I am sure, even with 75 years old, Mustafa will not leave his position, because he is very dictatorial, even members of Gorran who resigned said that. Mustafa will end like Talabani.
