The most prominent and famous Turkish journalist, Mehmet Ali Birand, said on open Turkish live TV to '' release Ocalan, give him amnesty and let him into Parliament in order to lead a political party. He should be allowed to lead politically''. Furthermore Mehmet Ali Birand said for the first time that his mother is a Kurd and that he is of Kurdish origin from his mother's side. '' My family are originally from Elaziz, Palu. I never knew this. It was told to me some time ago from family not very close to me. I am an assimilated Kurd. But I feel more like a Turk this day today due to the assimilation. I have no knowledge and never had any knowledge of my Kurdish ancestry.''

The interviewer asked him '' If you had the chance, would you make a reportage with Ocalan? '' Mehmet Ali Birand answers: '' Yes. Immidietly. Without any hesitation. And any journalist or reporter who says >> I am not going to interview Ocalan. That is against my moral<< should leave his profession and go home.''
