ERBIL-Hewlêr, Kurdistan region 'Iraq',— Kurdistan parliament session saw Sunday, June 30th, a fistfight between a number of members of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan PUK and their counterparts from the opposition Gorran (Change) movement, Iraq National News Agency reported.
The main Kurdish opposition party, the Gorran movement objected on two clauses on a draft law submitted by Kurdistan Regional Government KRG, stipulating the extension of the period of Kurdistan parliament speaker and the presidency.
Massoud Barzani was elected for a four-year term which expires in July. According to the law he must then stand down because he has served two terms and a fresh presidential election should be held. However, today’s motion reveals Barzani’s desire to stay in power and postpone the election.
As the Speaker tried to read the relevant paper there was uproar, with opposition MPs heckling and shouting “Fraud!” and “Illegal!”. There were fights between MPs from the ruling KDP and PUK and those from the opposition parties.
The police arrived and they arrested one opposition MP, Abdullah Mullah Nuri. He is a popular Gorran representative from Garmyan with a reputation for putting himself on the side of the poor.
Opposition MPs say the police intervention was completely one-sided in support of the ruling parties.
Gorran MP Kuêstan Mohammed told Sbeiy: “We are not keeping quiet and there will be a more tough response to this action”. To the pro-KDP Rudaw she added: “Our response will not be the normal”.
The objection resulted in talk quarrel that ended by throwing the Kurdistan parliament speaker with water bottles by one of the Change Movement members, Aswat al-Iraq reported.
Kurdish satellite TV NRT cited that Sunday's session, which was devoted to discuss the elections in the Kurdistan region, has seen verbal altercations then a fistfights between the number of members of the PUK and the members of the opposition Gorran movement.
Kurdish sources said it began with words argument between, Abdullah Mullah Nuri from Gorran movement and members from the PUK because of the support of Talabani's party PUK to grant a third term for the current President of Kurdistan, Massoud Barzani, which faced rejection from Change movement, later developed to fist fight.
The TV noted that the presidency of the parliament closed the door of the parliament to prevent the members of the Gorran movement to enter the Hall.
