I have quite a clue about that. But I have to be careful, when a bee stings, it's dying also, so it would be a kind of hara kiri.

My Animal Wise tarot told me all the time to 'protect' something. I know what, now : my external hard drive is unreadable, probably because it fall, and then most of my pics of Kurdistan 2007-2009 are lost.

NO you cannot lose information so easily unless you have a virus, and even then most information is salvageable

I admit to knowing absolutely NOTHING about your system but perhaps you could copy everything on that hard drive onto a more powerful one. If not find an expert because everything is readable even if someone has to take the hard drive apart
