Kurdish names

PostAuthor: Amjosa » Mon Sep 24, 2012 12:40 am

Hello.

I need some help with the pronunciation of two Kurdish names. Diyar and Shivan/Shiwan. How are they pronounced in Sorani and Kurmanji?

Diyar is pronounced the same way in sorani and kurmanji and it is pronounced exactly the way it is written .

Shivan will be Kurmanji and Shwan will be sorani .

Hello,
could you help me? :)
We will have a baby - boy. My husband is Kurd from Dogubayazit. We have chose the name FELEK. My husband thought, that it is boy-name. Now, he is at home and the family said that it is girl-name, because their girl-neighbour have this name. BUT I have found this page: http://thekurdish.com/kurdish-library/kurdish-names/129-kurdish-boy-names.html and "Felek" is in "kurdish boy names", but also in "kurdish girl names". So... what do you know about this name???
Thank you,
Esmer

I Googled and it seemed to be a surname/family name rather than a first name.

I suggest you use facebook and see if there are many boys with the name :D

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR SOON TO BE NEW BABY :ymparty:

I also know Felek only as a girls name, it is better if you dont give your son this name.

Thank you for your response. Indeed, on Facebook, I found several men by the name of Felek. My husband is still not entirely convinced this name because of the woman-neighbour of the same name. By the way - in my country, the name of Felek exists only as a male name.

It is Poland. The real name is Feliks, but very often used Felek, especially to children. This name is not very popular, but if Felek exists in both countries is very good for me.
Thank you for your wishes. Our family will be 4 - person. We have already one girl named Dila, so I think that Dila and Felek fit together :)

My husband, when he met me, did not learn my real name and called me Esmer. In our kurdish family I am Esmer :)

Over the years romance fades but cooking improves with experience :))
