i have seen dozens of the meanings in many news sites for the word peshmerga.

the funny is all these sites been english or persian, I never seen any kurdish site tell me the meaning of peshmerga.

Persians call pershmerga in their own dailect , PISH MARG and they say it means the one who dies first.

English news have INVENTED many meanings....one is "those who face death "
I can remember at first days of the iraq war , there was very wrong meanings in the news sites.

as for me as a kurd, I guess Pesh Merga means, those peopel who die BEFORE their Nation [Pesh means before , as Peshewa means somebody who is ahead of everybody ]

means if a danger come to danger the nation, they would rather die before others.

Peshmerga was used for the first time in Mahabad Republic.

As you know Dyaoko, Mahabad was a great time for culture. Qazi Mohammad was very fond of Kurdish culture.

So committeses of linguists, scholars, gathered to purify their language of Persian/Turkish/Arab/ influence... And they met for finding real Kurdish word in their official dictionnary.

And for the name of "feddayin" they sought a lot.

And at the end, some of these scholars asked to a poor man who was the housekeeper of their office. For gundî (farmers) spoke the purest and best Kurdish, because they did not study.

And they asked him how in Kurdish they say "feddayin" and he answered : in my country we say "peshmerga" : those who face death (English explanation is right because Archibald Roosevelt of President Roosevelt 's family and William Eagleton were very fond of this republic and wrote many papers about it, gathering all ppl's memories).

LOL I work in the Library for 2 years only... and I work about Kurdistan for 12 years... but this book has a good success in France.

Dyaoko, I don't believe there is an e-book version of Eagleton's book. But I will try to scannerize Roosevelt's papers.

Unfortunately, Google has not contacted small libraries like ours.
