Is there in sorani and /or in kurmanci any word corresponding to the Arabic "ya" (*) (and more or less to the English "o", but not commonly used nowadays) , used when you address someone?



(*) I mean for example when you say: " Marhaban ya Ahmed"

"Ya" is also used in our language (loan word)... as for example i call my mom "yadê".

If i would translate it to kurdish it would be "wa" for instance "Wa UE_kurdophile".

I haven't heard about "wa" being used like that... Interesting...



As Abdur pointed out, UE, we use "Ya" in Kurdish too... But in Kurdish we have a different phenomenon too...

We change the end of names to an "o" - although it is impolite, and outright rude to call an elder with an o ending...

Let me give you some example;

Abdur = Abdo (Ewdo in "total" Kurdish)
Ehmed = Ehmedo
Sinan = Sino
Fatih = Fato
Ednan = Edo
Cemal = Cemo

You could use the o ending on somebody younger or lesser than yourself... But not older or greater than yourself... Nor your equals (in both age and social status)...

kurdophile means something different. The Kurdish "ya" and "o" has nothing to do with the arabic "ya".

But the "ey" is more like "oh...."

"Ey Reqîb" = "Oh Guardian/Rival"

Ey Sohrab = Oh Sohrab

Ya Sohrab = something a bit different...

We use the "ya" in Kurdish too - but not so frequently... But please explain how the "ey" is the correct form, Amanc

Hmmm... I've always considered "Ey" to be more bursting and not so soft spoken or tender as "Ya"...

Must be because of my experience with Persians going "Ya Ali" all the time... They say it like they are gonna melt away...

Right Dyaoko? I bet you hear that a lot from Shia Iranians...

Persians are masters at melting when using their most seducing voice to say "ya Ali"... Nobody beats them... Not even Arabs... They would be more like "Y3a 3ali"
