Online Sorani tutorial request or class in Toronto?

PostAuthor: BC2000 » Fri Mar 12, 2010 7:08 am

My girlfriend really want's to learn Kurdish. Unfortunatly I won't be able to stay in Canada, I have to go back to Sweden, so I won't have the chance to teach her any. And to be frank, my kurdish is not that good, so I wouldn't be a good teacher. But since she is going to visit me while I'm in Sweden, she really want's to impress my parents, especially since my dad only speaks "Borat english" and my mother doesn't speak any english at all.

The ideal would be to find a very descriptive site written in roman letters (it would be a bit of an over course to start of with the traditional kurdish alphabet) and I would prefer if it had like an index for how it's pronounced, with english letters or maybe even where the phrases are pronounced in an audio file. I mean, I don't even know how to read this for an example "Demêke tum nebînîye" because I don't even know how to pronounce all those letters. So I want her to get a soft start and not to get discouraged, and once she understands the fundementals, the rest will come pretty easy because I will start speaking kurdish with her on a regular basis.

So something very easy, like phrases, how to count and etc would be really helpful.

And of course, if there are anyone here that lives in Toronto and know's if there's like a kurdish community that holds kurdish classes and etc, that would be highly appreciated :)

Love!

i will not recommend her my book for learning sorani, coz it scares kurdish people and made them confused. so no point to make this girl run off :D

this one is in sorani writting, but if you click on the topics and then on pictures it gives you pronunciation:
http://lexin.nada.kth.se/lang/trio/sk/sydkurdiska.htm

so take a look, maybe will be useful.

but i have the same problem - no books and no teachers (accept my new online teacher, but its still difficult over internet, not personally). all the rest websites for learning (in fact not for grammar problems, but only short stories, readings for kids) - all are in sorani writting, so if she dont know the script its usless for her. if she would like to learn sorani script, maybe will be easy with this keybord:
http://www.lexilogos.com/clavier/sorani.htm

anyway i wish good luck and hopefully she will learn this beautiful language.

at the moment i speak "Borat sorani"

Mehran: Nothing to be sorry about :) Naw she's Carribean... But to be honest, I'm not saying this because I'm kurdish my self, kurdish is not that hard of a language. Compare it to languages like arabic or hindi. We don't have genus in our language, which I believe is very helpful. There's no such word in Sorani for he/she/it. In arabic or spanish for an example, it's all genus regelated. Habibi for men, habibti for women. Ta'al if you wanna call a man, Ta'ali to call a woman etc.

Not to mention that the sentences and grammar is very simple too. The verb "Going" in Sorani for an example, is always have the same components, for an example (pardon my spelling)

Mn erom (I am going)
Tu eroit (You are going)
Ow erwat (He/she/it is going)
Ema Arroyn (We are going)
Owan arron (They are going)

You can see the pattern and with some common sense it's not that hard :) But to read and write the traditional Kurdish alphabet can be tricky.

Kulka: Zor supass dlakem! Those sites will be helpful.

shayani niya barezm.

sorani is not the most difficult language, but still not simple (compare to english for example, but english seem s to be the most simple thing in the world).
you are right about the genius - it is in polish language, but not only for she and he, also for it - thats 3 of them - and its not the only one headache - i have big respoect for people who are able to learn polish language (i know few kurds, students in poland, who can speak polish!).

you rexample of "going" seems to be simple, coz its present time (which in fact is irregular for she/he), but if you look at past tense, specially plural, for verb "hatn" ( هاتن)
mn hatm
to hatit
ew hat

ema hatin
ewa hatn
awan hatn

while the other verb, for example "xuardn" (خواردن ) has different endings:

mn xuardm
to xuardt
ew xuardi

ema xuardman
ewa xuardtan
awan xuardyan

and now we have to guess which verbs ends like in the first example, and which ends like in the second example. sometimes i am scared that sorani is completly "free style". :D - in that sence, for me - kurdish original (traditional) script is one of the simplest things out of all, just different letters, but very nice one - to be honest i love to write from right to left :D .
