Kurmanji must live!

PostAuthor: kurd-sthanam » Tue Oct 12, 2010 8:46 am

Is kurmanji realy banned in KRG? why? what thinks people about it?

http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/kur ... -live.html

Dear President Masoud Barzani
Dear Prime Minister Barham Saleh

In the past century, the occupiers of our homeland Kurdistan have fiercely attempted to assimilate the Kurdish culture and identity by banning the Kurdish language from the education system, social and political life and media. Ironically, today, in Iraqi Kurdistan – within some Kurdish circles – a similar policy has been formulated to impose the Sorani dialect over Kurmanji speakers and the speakers of other dialects.

For so many years, Kurds have been subject to cruel denial and suppression. The use of Kurdish language in education, except in Iraq, has been outlawed for decades. Today, Iraqi Kurdistan is the only part of Kurdistan where students are freely educated in Kurdish, as it is the only region where Kurds are governing themselves.

In April of 2008 a petition, by a group of 53 self-declared intellectuals, was generated in support of imposing Sorani as the medium in the education system while banning Kurmanji. In support of the idea, the former Minister of Education, Dr. Dilshad Abdulrahman, attempted to implement this self-destructive policy; however, the attempt to ban Kurmanji was faced with a fierce debate and was strongly rejected by the intellectuals and academics of Kurmanji speaking regions.

Nevertheless, the conspirators remained determined to ban Kurmanji from the education system. To carry on the plan and impose Sorani as the only official language, a conference was held in late December of 2009, by the Kurdistan Language Academy, in Hewler, headed by Dr. Shafiq Qazaz. The organizer’s dark intentions were revealed, as it was unveiled that a letter of a prominent Kurdish intellectual and author, Amir Hassanpour was forged when the genuine letter was exposed and read to the conference.

Due to the political predicaments that Kurds are facing today, implementing such policy will have harmful ramifications; it has the potential to further divide our nation and create a state of mistrust amidst the citizens of Kurdistan.

We strongly believe that the best solution to the Kurdish linguistic dilemma is to allow the regions to freely choose the medium of education. Most importantly, Kurmanji must be granted official status equal to Sorani on the state level, within the KRG administration.

We turn to you to interfere in this matter based on the following reasons:

1. Freedom of choice: Kurdistan Regional Government is a democratic political system; therefore, based on democratic principles, the citizens have the right to choose their native dialect as the dialect of education in their region.

2. Based on numerous scientific studies, educating students in their native dialect would increase the comprehension and motivation level of students in education.

3. Today, the province of Duhok is the only region where the once endangered dialect, Kurmanji, is surviving and being used freely.

4. Kurmanji is a dialect spoken by some 40% of Kurds in Iraq; in addition, it is the dialect spoken by over 75% of Kurds in greater Kurdistan and it is the only dialect spoken in all parts of Kurdistan.

Without a doubt, each dialect in its oral and written form is a window to our history. Each proverb, poem, story, and song gives us clues about the past. In order to preserve the Kurdish history and culture, it is imperative to educate the next generation of students in these dialects.

In numerous democratic countries, more than one official language or dialect is recognized at both the province and the national level. For example, Switzerland, approximately the size of Iraqi Kurdistan, has four official languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh. India has 26 national languages and each state can decide their own official language or dialect; neither the constitution, nor any Indian law defines any national language.

We strongly believe that the best solution to the Kurdish linguistic dilemma is to allow the regions to freely choose the medium of education. Most importantly, Kurmanji must be granted official status equal to Sorani on the state level, within the KRG administration. Moreover, regional dialects should be offered as a special Kurdish language course (Kurmanji and Sorani) as a requirement in the educational curriculum. While Sorani speaking regions use this dialect in their education system, they should also offer selective Kurmanji courses to their students. Same thing is applicable to Kurmanji speaking regions; education language should be in their mother tongue Kurmanji, where as student are also given to opportunity to learn selective Sorani courses. Implementing such policy will help the next generation of Kurds to easily communicate with one another, regardless of dialect. Moreover, it will help break the barriers between our people, bring them closer, and help better understand one another, and will pave the way for the creation of a unified Kurdish language.

Respectfully Yours

is it true? ... i cant believe... its kurdish language - the same as sorani, badhini, hawrami and more dialects of different regions - we all should love every inch of kurdishness - kurdayati, only that way our country will stand strong on their feets and face any enemy with the proud face. every single word in any kurdish dialect is beutiful and every stone in Kurdistan is precious.

yes, it is very sad that kurds are doing the same, as their enemies were doing against them. example is hewrami, where they have no standart yet. but KRG‌ never wants work with it. the other example is the northern kurdistan television ROJ‌ TV, were there were many zazaki programs, more than sorani, but today ROJ‌ TV is almost never broadcasting in zazaki. very sad....

Come on guys.. I think the article is very misleading..
Think about it, 2-10 dialects be taught in schools, 2-10 dialects used in official documents, 2-10 dialects used at university not to mention educational books etc, this is not going to work... there has to be one official dialect for the reasons mentioned above, and also the way they said 'ban kurmanji' as if the language dialect would be banned all together, no.. all they asked for is an official language.. the reason this was not done before is Kurdistan was never serious, we didn't have universities before etc.. this will have to be done and the sooner the better! it doesn't matter which dialect it is, as long as it's done or we'll suffer later on..

The article has obvious political aims, to me it seems like the writer wanted to create chaos for kurds.. don't fall for it..

this reminds me of the turkish state, that say "we are all one, we are one people but they are bringing chaos to us". all kurdish enemies sad and say still one official language. and today, kurds doing it to themselves. take the schwiss example. there are many official languages, but there is also one unite official language where all can this language. in india hindu and english are the unite languages. do you want forget sorani if kurmanji was the one official language? it is total crazy that kurdish language is banned by kurds. why it is not arabic or english if there should be one official language? you would say that we speak all kurdish, but different dialekts. but no, we call it dialects but we dont understand each other. this is the best carasteristics of kurds, that we still call us one nation with so big differences. I do only understand kurmanji, and im sure you dont understand me when i speak my mothertongue. what with fx. hewrami? it is very sad that treasures holden for hundreds, thausands of years will gone. i feel a sorani nationalism in south and kurmanji nationalism in north....

You don't make any sense.. how can you compare turks to kurds? they are trieng to turkiefy us, but how can a Kurd kurdify kurds?
As I said the article is misleading, you talk of a dialect being banned as if it will not be allowed to be used at all, no all they were asking for is one dialect to be used officially in universities and schools, this has to be done.. image one class of students studying medicine for example (this is not a joke subject) and in this class there is a mix of both sorani and kurmanji speakers, what then? what dialect do we use? do you expect the lecturer to prepare to teach in two dialects? are we going to use books in two dialects? come on man, think out of the books there is no reason why other dialects can't be spoken outside professional areas.

maybe for example - universities - in the area dominated by kurmandji speakers the lectures in kurmandji should be available - if sorani speaking student want to study there, his duty is to understand the language, and if kurmandji students would like to study in "sorani area" its his duty to understand sorani. but of course for the practical purposes one offical language should be in use, which would be understood by all people - but the question is which one to chose not to harm anyone and not to be unjust. but some countries have more than one official language, like switzerland, mentioned above and in belgium they have three languages (and one more which is in use) or canada. even in countries which have one official language - there are still some regional dialects, completly different from official (there is like that in poland, for example) - and these ethnic groups have their programs in their language in local tv and they can learn it at schools as well. in Wales road signs are written both in english and welsh - so everything can be sorted out.
in China they have few thousands letters (in facty complicated pictures more than letters) in alphabet - thats the problem

What makes sense...!!!?? what will the official "only one" language of a free kurdistan be for example? 24 million kurds will speak the language spoken by 6 million sorani kurds? you can not kurdify kurds, but kurds can kill kurdish pride and national treasures!! I have given example of swiss. you dont need equal official languages all around. in europe many univercities are in english, and in Denmark all engineering and science books in universities are in English. but what you are talking about is, banning kurmanji, hewrami to be researched. Of course all should know and LEARN a one unity language. and I'm sure it is not difficult for sorani speaker to understand or learn kurmanji. but it makes not sence to let the other language only give permission to speak at home. this is absolutely like turkish politics. like turks say we are all "anatolians" and brothers we should use one official language, the rest can be spoken home...
sorry but you have same politics and ideas like turkish nationalists.

Ahh it's like talking to a brick :(

Some quick pointers:-

-We are talking about two different dialects of kurdish not two different languages (your compassion with turkeys Turkish-Kurdish issues)
-No where have I asked for sorani to be the official dialect, but thanks for bringing out your true colours and openly saying kurmanji should be.
-An official dialect not language is different, it will only be used in schools and government you can speak what ever you want at home, class or even work.
-Think of the next generation, different dialects create division, and you'll see that I'm correct.

I don't see the problem...

brick is you.

-you mean kurdish dialect, languages has no matter and no meaning for kurds, kurdish nation? Do you believe kurdish dialects/languages are the same as english dialects, american ghetto english vs birtish english vs US english? Do you understand all kurdish dialects? no. there are no standart kurdish language. even words as "mother, father, come, go, here, there" are different in kurdish languages/dialects.

-Have I sad that kurmanji shoud be official language? no. you are poeming your self anything. And what makes the difference if there should be one official language like you say? kurmanji or sorani?

-you have shown your face, kurdish dialects/languages besides sorani has no matter, "they can just speak at home".

my beloved brothers - you both are two great Kurds from our great Kurdistan - you have full right to have different opinion and to discuss it freely. But please, dont get angry with each other, dont fight or use bad words against each other - coz every time i see something like that my heart is broken. Both of you are right in some way, but the thing we are disscusing here is so far in future time that you should calm down. Both of you. Kurdistan is not my "dream" - is the future, but i think still very far away future - and we all know that and we know why. So untill the problem of one united language will come up as a result of united independent country - a lot of time will pass. I believe kurdish nation, the people of Kurdistan are wise enough to sort this problem in the future with no harm of anyone and anything.
I love you both, boys - no matter how you speak, as long as you speak kurdish. We have enough enemies around us, so we have no choice - we must be united and we must keep ouselves together.
So i hope you stop it.

This is ridiculous why are you so stubborn? I don't care if the official language is kurmaci, sorani, hewrami or zazaki. I am telling you that no official dialect is a path to doom,

1. It would cost more money
2. Leave room for division
3. Makes no sense
4. back to 1
5. all of the above

Your being to 'romantic' about this and take it too personally, no one is saying if you go a court you have to speak in the official language, all I'm saying is that laws are written in one dialect, educational book are written in one dialect, you can speak what ever the hell you want where ever the hell you want.

I'm getting sick and tired of this, kurmanji kurds accuse me of being a 'pro sorani' and on other sites if I give barzani and his party some well deserved credit the goran-asshole soranis accuse me of not being a sorani, and all of this is becuase we have never had an official language, if you don't want one fine, I'd like to see what happens in 50-100 years when we can be abused and divided by almost anyone.
