i'm kurmanji speaker, the strange with kurmanji and sorani and this language is, i understand many words and more than 50% maybe 80% but i cant set the words together and make sense of them. do you understand this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etMvMCYZ404&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0&hd=1    it should be very close to feyli.

but the dialects is sounding beautiful. all dialects and languages of kurds have their own beauty. but they are all worlds bests number 1.

So do Soranis understand Fayli? For me it's the way Soranis speak and their accent basically.

I do not know much about Zazaki , but I'm yet to find a kurdish dialect that I do not understand ,,well at least most of what the preson is saying :D . The root of the words is mostly the same and I think learning both sorani and Kurmanji makes it easier to understand the other dialects , may be not completely , but at least communication is possible .
The major obsticle is when a dialect uses some arabic or turkish words .Fayli due to their geographical proximity with arabs along with arabization uses lots of arabic words which makes it very difficult for someone from Northern or western Kurdistan to understand .

Well if you know Sorani you understand Fayli, and for me it's harder to understand kurmanji in Bakur compared to the kurmanji they speak in wimre or Maku in Rojhelat probably bcoz of influence. If you know Zazaki, you'll understand Hawrami.

yes you are right, i have seen here (in denmark) southern kurds who spoke danish with me and sad that they dont understand "konya" kurdish and did funny of us :) but there are normal no communitation problems, because they speak close to kurmanji as possible, there are only problems when they begin to speak with each other fluent sorani. here in denmark its most sorani speakers who are clever to learn to communicate with kurmanji speakers. just the opposite of south kurdistan.
