Turkey leader condemns video of 'dead Kurdish militant dragged by neck'

Anthea: I prefer the term freedom fighter

Turkey’s prime minister has condemned dissemination of a video purporting to show a dead Kurdish militant dragged through the streets tied by the neck to an armoured police vehicle, images that could further inflame tension in the country’s south-east.

“It is unacceptable to treat any corpse this way, even if it is a dead terrorist,” Ahmet Davutoglu said, while not explicitly confirming the veracity of the video and photographs widely posted on Twitter.

Davutoglu, whose AK party faces national elections in November, was speaking in a live interview with HaberTurk TV about the video. It was apparently taken in the province of Sirnak, focus of clashes since a ceasefire between the army and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers party (PKK) broke down in July.

“Our interior ministry … will conduct a comprehensive investigation, not into the incident itself, but into the way in which this incident was reflected to the world,” Davutoglu said. X(

Security forces have killed 22 PKK militants since Friday in clashes in the town of Silvan, which had been under a round-the-clock curfew until Monday and seized weapon stockpiles, the provincial governor in Diyarbakir said.

Two soldiers were killed in separate attacks in Gaziantep and Osmaniye on Monday, the army said.

Turkish warplanes on Monday bombed PKK targets identified by drones near the south-eastern town of Semdinli, security sources said, with air and ground operations continuing and special forces being deployed by helicopter.

More than 120 members of the security forces and hundreds of militants have been killed since July, leaving a three-year-old peace process in tatters and raising concern about the security of the parliamentary election.

Video footage purporting to show the dead militant first appeared on social media. It showed a body in a red shirt and dark trousers, a rope around the neck, being dragged through darkened streets. Part of the video appeared to have been filmed from inside the vehicle.

Selahattin Demirtas, the leader of the leftwing People’s Democratic party (HDP), retweeted one of the images.

“Take a good look at this photo. It was taken the day before yesterday [Friday] in Sirnak. No one should forget, because we will not forget,” Demirtas said in the tweet on Sunday.

An HDP spokesman, Cem Bico, said the dead man had been identified as the brother-in-law of a party lawmaker.

The PKK has been fighting for greater Kurdish autonomy for more than three decades, and is listed as a terrorist organisation in Turkey, Europe and the United States.

Braving nationalist anger, the government introduced tentative reforms on Kurdish rights and in 2012 launched negotiations to try to end a PKK insurgency that has killed 40,000 people since 1984. A fragile ceasefire had been holding since March 2013 but ended after violence erupted following the election that deprived the AKP of its single-party majority.

If the video proves to be genuine, it would represent a major misstep for the government, and could deepen divisions between security forces and Turkey’s large Kurdish community, according to terrorism expert Suleyman Ozeren, from the thinktank Global Strategy and Policy.

“A couple of years ago these kinds of actions were not being seen, I hope this is an isolated event. When police or security personnel do things like that they are helping the PKK.”

Re: Turkey condemns video of dead Kurd dragged by neck

People's Defense Center (HSM) Headquarters Command has released a statement regarding the savage torture perpetrated against Hacı Lokman Birlik whose dead body was dragged behind a police vehicle after his execution in Şırnak province last week.

HSM said it was the Kurdish people's honour and dignity that was dragged on the ground in the body of Hacı Birlik, and underlined that he will be avenged.

The statement said Birlik was executed by AKP's special contra forces that belonged to a dark mindset and bore no value judgment or humanity, recalling that he was shot 25 times at close range although he had already lost his life at the scene.

'KURDISH PEOPLE'S HONOUR DRAGGED IN THE PERSON OF HACI BİRLİK'

Noting that Birlik's body was furthermore tied behind an armored vehicle and dragged on streets until it was decomposed, HSM Headquarters Command described the torture against his dead body as fascism.

Refuting the claims voiced by Turkish Prime Minister that Hacı Lokman Birlik was a guerrilla, HSM said Birlik was a Kurdish patriot that bravely resisted the colonial system in his lands.

"Birlik's body dragged on streets is actually the honour and dignity of the Kurdish people. The Turkish state must know this truth, and that this will be avenged."

'TURKISH STATE TRYING TO DECEIVE THE PUBLIC OPINION'

Calling attention to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and AKP's pro-war propaganda, the statement said; "Erdoğan's remarks that 'We killed over 2000 terrorists' is nothing more than nonsense, as the reality is already reflected by the balance sheets we make public as HPG. They have started a major perception operation to deceive the public opinion in order to cover up the unsuccess they faced when their most extensive aerial operation even has failed. It is certain that Erdoğan and AKP, who are conducting aerial operations with their special war forces and running a perception operation through their media, will lose against the Kurdistan guerrilla forces that represent the reality and march towards victory, and the Kurdish people who keep their resistance going with honour and dignity."

People's Defense Center Headquarters Command also commemorated PKK Central Committee Member and HPG Command Council Member Baran Dersim who fell a martyr in Dersim on September 16 and will be laid to rest today.

HSM called upon all the patriotic Kurdish people and revolutionist-socialist forces to ensure mass participation in the funeral to take place today.
