a question...

PostAuthor: Nistiman » Thu Dec 15, 2005 8:52 pm

umm....i don't mean to be a nuisance but I have a problem that will only be relevant for the Next couple of days:

I've had no problems in the past with burning simple Word files onto a CD on my CD Drive. But, there's this one file I can't burn onto my CD! It is encrypted so I can't access it (it is an .xmw file). Would that make a difference? And can I get around it?

[and normally I just drag the file into my CD drive and it automatically burns it...I tried with Nero to burn it but was still unsuccesful..argh]

Thank you for the person who offers a non-complicated solution!

what do you mean of encrypted, how it has been encrypted ?
you mean like : a program to hide files on hard disk ?

normally every file , even encrypted files should be able to be copied into a CD,

I give the possibility that your file is READ-ONLY ....so it can not be moved to the CD, I sugesst that you Right Click on your file , and then choose properties, then , set the atributres,...if the Read-only is checked , Un-Check Read ONly and also hidden or system Attribute.

if it is XP you can use XP's own CD burner.

No, the file is neither Read-Only nor is it Hidden. And yes, I use Windows XP, so yeah, normally I just drag a file into my CD drive icon and it automatically burns it - which is why I was suprised I couldn't do that with this file. I thought maybe it was a faulty CD and after going thru 3 CDs, I realized it must be something else.

How is it encrypted? I don't know too much about the process... :?: only that I can't open the file...

thanks Dyaoko...

try to copy that file to another folder , not to a cd,

and tell me if that file can be copy to another folder on the hard.

if it can be copied , then it can also be copied to a CD.
and also please give me the error message.

yes, it can be copied onto another folder...but when I go to burning it on a CD it just says "it was unsuccessful" and doesn't give any other reasons.

Plus, when I try to do it with Nero it asks me to save it ...which it doesn't normally ask me if I were burning some other file.

Well, I was hoping there was some quick fix but there never is with computers. it is sooo frustrating!

I just have to convince the person at the university to accept the file as an email attachment ... it seems solving the human problem will be easier than the computer one! :)

thank you Dyaoko! i'll just let this slide as one of the stupid mysteries of my undependable laptop...

Nistman,
You sounded you already have taking care of this problem but if you get a chance can you rename this file with its extension (for example fileName.wmx to something like fileName.txt) and see if you can burn to cd.....

sometimes the reason that a file is not being copied to another place is :

"that file is being used by another program "

that happens usualy when you Ab-normaly close a program.

for example your CPU crushes and you close your word file FORECLY , and then you continue working with you pc [that file is still being used by word anonymously ...and CPU dont let you do anyhting with that file....that file is in M.Word's control now and you are not allowed to touch it ]

so restarting the compuer is always a good idea for most of the problems.
