I'm not sure that French are persuaded to be the best nation in the world. In fact I rarely meet a French happy of his country and his people. French adore to dislike themselves.

and the difference ?

In any case, I don't feel myself as of" French nationality" but "European" of European Union. France is only a regionalism for me.

Hey Piling,I was refering to Tomjez who said he is not French but still has to admit he is (or grew) IN France, that's the difference!

Yes I am feeling European too(look at my nickname, UE is "Unione Europea",as we say),but not many people feel this way in Europe, they have euros in their pockets but not EU in their hearts! I

I would like to exchange quickly my French passport for a European passport in fact. European Union is one of the most interesting political project currently.

I admit it is written "french republic" on my passpot. It is also written "European union". Guess which one I'd like to get rid of!

I grew up in Brittanny, so in my mind technically different: even if language is not spoken a lot, only among elderly, the accent, the traditions, the music, the culture, the history the landscape, the mood, the spirit are different. I spent exactly 3 and a half year of my life in "France" (Lille + Bordeaux). All my childhood in Brittanny the rest in Turkey and now Hungary. And when I'm in France I feel abroad, except I speak the language. Being french is purely administrative for me, maybe you can't understand, but neither me nor my ancestors chose to be french.

I hope it’s not France. Do you have about same France as I’ve in mind? French politicians and policy suck big time, but I hope you can see the true beauties of France. Land of many great painters, moviemakers, philosophers/thinkers, writers etc… People like Voltaire, Jean-Paul Sartre, Louis Aragon, Emile Zola, Jean-Luc Godard, Marcel Carné, Paul Cézanne, Renoirs (father and son) etc.

Well France has a wonderful culture, and I am very happy to be borned in it, and especially to have French as mother language for it is very difficult to learn it ! But I like other European cultures as if they are mine, I mean Shakespeare, Italian or Nederland paintings, German music, etc., or are a part of my culture also. France is my homeland region and Europa is my homeland State, that's the difference.

But Tom feels differently, we have not the same background. :)

Moreover I have 2 homelands, for I consider myself as a French Kurdistanî too, and I adore Middle Eastern culture. Then 2 passports, European and Kurdistanî would the best solution.

Blablablah, this is really a foreigner vision of France "how can you criticize france, there is Edith Piaf, Café de Flore and "Amélie". Reality is not a postcard, so no we don't have the same vision in mind! Check French politics in todays news, what do you have: Torture and Murder of a young jew , non intervention of the state in an epidemy of a mysterious virus in the Reunion Island (colony), growing precarity for young people, rumors of torture in french police...

I don't criticize French Culture, but French Republic, the State of cultural assimilation and colonization of third world.

What is Godard (who made films to celebrate the beauty of cultural revolution in China...) to me when the language of my people has been banned for one century..."It is forbidden to speak Breton and to spit on the floor" is enough for not feeling French.

Aragon for me is this guy who wrote lyrical poem in the honor of Staline.

Sartre is the guy who when the crime of stalinism where denounced by Kroutchov said "Il ne faut pas désespérer Billancourt (big car factory in Paris)" : in other terms "it is better that the proletarians don't know about these crimes, otherwise they will stop believing in communism".

Do you know my Voltaire's favourite: "People need to be instructed, not educated", a great democrat.

Have you ever heard about Xavier Grall, Glenmor, Per Jakez Helias, the breton language, the Breton Kingdom? The only vision France gives to the world is a Parisien elitist one, they don't care about their diversity.

With this argument, why would Kurds in Iran refuse to be iranians (If Iran was a democray): they don't need their language, since the Iranian one is a superior culture, with such a great tradition, writers, poets, musician, film makers: they should be proud to be persians...

You see how it sounds?

France is not the worse State in the world of Course, at least "I'm free to be french", how lucky I am, and if I say I'm Breton I face no danger. But is is one of the UE less democratic state, and it is getting worse and worse.

And thinking it is "the country of human rights" is an insult to all the people who were tortured, killed, refugees expelled to their country of origin by groups of 50, forcly assimilated minorities, betrayed Harkis, segregated immigrants, people refused a job because their name doesn't sound "french".

It has never been "the country of human rights". In the aftermath of french revolution in 1789, the parisian government sent "death squads" to the rebelious west of France and to Britanny...around 5000 bretons have been drowned in the Loire River by a great democrat called Carrier. In the same time, declaration of human rights did not apply to Slaves in the colonies of course! Only for White people, speaking french....In the very democratic french convention, some deputies proposed that Brittanny and Alsace be emptied of their population, to force them to learn french language and break the national feeling.

When you know unofficial history, France does not look so good.

Torture and Murder of a young jew

By an African  bad assimilation OK, but face the fact that today antisemitism comes mostly from muslims or Arab (french or not) ppl. Not in the name of France but of Palestine, odd !
