The suppression of ethnic cultures and minority religious groups in attempting to forge a modern nation were not unique to Turkey but occurred in very similar ways in its European neighbours - Bruinessen.

Gérard Chaliand is a sympathizer of the Kurdish cause and of guerilla in general. He met Kurds under Mustafa Barzani's revolution. Nowadays he analyzes geostrategy in the Middle East. He is a bit hostile toward US and Turkey.

And William Eagleton has written the first and the most complete book in English about the Republic of Mahabad. He seems very admirative of what the republic had achieved in only one year.

Sandrine Alexie is based in Paris. She is hated by PKK sympathisants and is quite known amongst them. She works in the Kurdish institute. Although she is known for her writings against the PKK and their leader Apo. She also sometimes write about other things.
