Kurdish Names

Hey,
I am certain that this topic must have been posted several times, but please bear with me.
I am currently writing a novel, and I hope to complete it maybe in a year. The novel is in its initial stages, and so I need to find names for my characters.

I would like to know if there are nice Kurdish names for the following meanings:
Brave and fearless, wise, nature-related meanings, strong-willed, honourable and any other name you are particularly fond of.

You can post names in either gender or both.

Hey,
No I don't mind at all. But the storyline is still vague, even to me. So I can give you a general of what its about: It'll involve a Kurdish girl, whose father is a prominent figure in the fight to make Kurdistan a free country. I'm not sure whether I will make up a rebel political party or whether it will be simply PKK. Soon though, another ravaging of the Kurdish villages takes place, and he is captured and executed. Knowing that his daughter would be in grave danger, he begged his wife, before his death, to send their daughter away to a foreign country. From there, the daughter will attain education and follow in her father's footsteps...and much more, but I can't describe it all in one post. So basically that's the gist of it. I know I have lots of research to do lol.

I have written several short stories in the past, but this is the first novel that I'm pursuing with enthusiasm.

So that's why my protagonist needs a lovely Kurdish name, which would have meanings such as "brave" or "free" attached to it.

wow that's great that you are writing about kurdistan. and it seems like a very interesting storyline. i can't wait to read it! inshallah i will be able to purchase it in stores one day soon.

"hiwa" and "ashti" already mentioned are really nice. ashti means peace and i believe northern kurds use it as female and southern kurds use it as male. i was looking in some other threads and i found "lana" (f) symbol for home. here is the link for more info on the name viewtopic.php?f=8&t=3098 i was thinking lana would be nice for the girl in your story.

Matin, thank you for your encouragement! I hope it turns out to be a story worth reading. I would love to be able to show what and who the Kurds truly are, and the lionheart they possess. But also, I want to plunge them into the context of the world, and demonstrate what impact they could have in global politics. This sounds really abstract I hope for the best and will do my best!

So far I like several names, and in this order, for my protagonist:
1.Ashti - Peace
2. Asti - Freedom
3. Delnia- calm and confident.

I was also thinking of Azadeh...what is the origin of this name? I know its fairly common among Persians.

dear roojin, Aştî and Ashti is the same name. ş is sh and î is ee sound. kurdangel wrote the names with kurdish spelling, but i don't have a kurdish keyboard so i wrote them with regular letters. From my knowledge Ashti means peace and Azadi is freedom unless i'm mistaken. persians have ashti as well but they use solh also

Azade is a nice name too. i'm not a linguist so i'm not an expert on the origins of words but azad i believe is an arian word. there are many others like shirin, khosh, etc. they're not only in persian and kurdish but also in languages like pashto and hindi. and since kurds, persians, and pashtuns are all arians you can say azad is original to all of them.

Oh really?Okay, well I like the name Asti in general! It makes sense that they are both the same name. The only thing that confused me was that Kurdangel posted Asti as meaning freedom. As for the names
Aştî means Peace not freedom
Azad means Independence and I think it means Freedom too if I am not mistaken .
I suggest these
Serbest means " Free and Freedom " ... ( Male )
Welat means " Homland " ....... ( Male )
Zana means " knowledgeable " .. ( Unisex )

I have another quick question...I hope I'm not pushing my luck here :p

What does the name Reza mean? Its such a beautiful name. So as you can see, now I'm looking at male names, for my male characters. Serbest sounds really nice too.

Reza means: consent, agreement. Reza is also a common male name in Iran, probably because the 8th Imam of Shi'ites was named Reza.
