Thank You in kurdish (Spas or Razîme???)

PostAuthor: Nazelia. » Thu Apr 08, 2010 7:15 am

Most of kurds use SPAS as THANK YOU, but. . . . .
SPAS is not in kurdish language!!! It is in russian.
May be someone say, it is kurdish word but in russian use it . . . But no! :)
"Spas" doesn't have a word-root in kurdish language. SPAS is from russian word SPASIBO,
it has two word-roots SPASI and BOG.
SPASI=SAVE
BOG=GOD
(SPASIBOG)
SPASIBO=GOD SAVE.
There is "Razîbûn" in kurdish as thankfulness.
Thank You=Razîme
Thank You very much=Pir' Razîme

Let God be thankful for You=Xwedê ji Te Razî be.

what about "dast xosh" ?
and the other question - what was the way that the word "supas" came to kurdish language - considering the fact that its one of the basic words in a language it seems strange taht its of foreign origin.

A sure sign that a language is alive and well is its ability to borrow foreign words and adapt them for its own use. Loan words come about for lots of reasons. This is not actually something to worry about, all languages that survive to the present day are ones that have evolved and survived because of their adaptability. A prime example of that adaptability is English. On the other hand a language that strives for purity on all levels will unfortunately sign it's own death warrant. An example of this process is modern Turkish. A couple of years after the founding of the Turkish Republic a language commission was set up to oversee a purge on all words loaned to Turkish and their replacement by words of Turkish origin. There are many in Turkey that see the work of the TDK as linguistic fascism and believe their work has led to a stagnation of the Language.

I suppose my point is, don't look for purity all the time, you might find that it destroys more than it preserves.

The word thank you in Kurdish was great and I feel I am very excited to learn different languages. Language is actually always alive as long as it is used even though it's other words that had been adopted from some native language.
Anyway, I have a Russian friend who always speak to me in his native language. Can you translate these words into English?
- Chem ty seychas zanimaeshsya?
- Ya mechtayu vstretit zhencshiny, chtoby razdelit s ney moyu zhizn neplokho
- ya tebya panimayu
- K sozhaleniyu, ya poka ne govoryu po russki
- do svidaniya

dear Nazelia, if you dont mind i would translate one of that sentence a bit different.

- Ya mechtayu vstretit zhencshiny, chtoby razdelit s ney moyu zhizn neplokho=I wish to meet a woman that separate my life time with her no bad.

for me it seems like - i wish to meet woman to share my life with her (and "not bad" in that context may be "nice").

Sorry I am presently on a rush so I cannot actualy answer everything right now. But as bringing it back to the thread topic I just paste these words from another thread which is regarding to this topic directly:

"in connection with Kurdish "sipas" I got to affirm that it is of a certain Kurdish origin:

Northern Kurdish (Kurmanjí): sipas

Central Kurdish (Soraní): supas / sipas

Southern Kurdish (Kirmajhí): sipas

Official Persian (not in colloquial speech): sépas

It is an Iranian word and possibly, from a root-finding (etymological) aspect, has nothing to do with Russian "spasibo". Its root is Middle Iranian "spas" ~ "thank, blessing, grace". Also "razí" is an Arabic loan in Kurdish language. The term "razíme" literally means "I am pleased". So that "sipas" is a preferable choice.

In case of root-finding the outward resemblance shared between two words is nothing at all, unless we could confirm that they are of the same root. Consider Kurdish "bed" and English "bad". Both convey exactly the same meaning, but they are no etymological cognates (namely they are not derived from a common root). But on the other hand we got Kurdish "sipindí" ("shepherd dog"), English "hound" ("hunting dog"), both sharing the same Indo-European root. And it might be astonishing if I told you that even Russian "sabaka" ~ "dog" and Armenian "shun" (if I am correct to spell it) share the same Indo-European root too! As you see Kurdish "sipindí", English "hound", Russian "sabaka", and Armenian "shun" don’t look alike very much, but nevertheless they do share the same root; in contrary to Kurdish "bed" and English "bad" that are apparently all alike but originally don’t hold a common root. An example of outwardly similar words sharing the same root could be Kurdish "bra" , Russian "brat", and English "brother"; they all look alike as well as they are derived from a common Indo-European root."

God willing I will reply in full by tomorrow.

I've never used the word Sîpas ever as haven't anyone in my family, it wasn't used at all in the region my kurmanci come from. We use other ways to show our thanks, mostly by saying - "Xwode ji te razi be" or "Gelek Memnun"
