How many soldiers have the Peshmerga? I know that they reduced the nummbers of soldiers to modernize the Peshmerga. And now after they have terminated the pensioners, they want to increase the number of soldiers.

But what is now the exact number, but only Peshmergas, not Kurds who are in the Iraqi army.

Alan

That's actually a Mi-171 (2-3 year old max), it has a VK2500 engine http://en.klimov.ru/production/helicopter/VK-2500/ (same as KA-52 alligator) and is armoured against 14.5mm shots!

the design, is antiquated of course. but the people are still buying them like there's no tomorrow. Mil's newer options like the Mi38 simply hasn't taken off in the same way.

the website says that engine CAN be upgraded to an Mi-17 , but the Q is , are the iraqi old Mis really upgraded with these engines ? from the posts i read on fb it apparently was very loud , there are helis the Peshies use as well in one occasion they have threw down Nergiz , a kurdish flower, down on ppl , but i never heard these same comments about them been loud !!

as well as some of US choppers left behind to Peshies as the one posted with the kurdish flags .

Yes the Iraqi Mils are all new builds and factory fitted with the latest engine. They are also fitted with US AN/ALE 47 protection system against SAM/AAMs. (probably some of the highest spec Mi17s in the air).

But yes the old-style rotor hub means that its VERY noisy in the air.

I can't say I'm 100% certain. But I am pretty sure the US hasn't given the Peshmerga any helicopters! If they did they would announce it on the EDA "Excess Defence Articles" list, http://www.dsca.mil/programs/eda/progdef.htm

and here's the database. http://www.dsca.mil/programs/eda/search.asp

i know you cant be 100% sure but maybe it is not put there so that turkey doesnt bark ;) , look at what iraq is doing about some war planes that do not exist imagine if its made public that we have US choppers what would the al malikis do then !!?? you see my point ! .... i have heard now from too many people "from KRG" confirming the Peshemrga operating US choppers , its not a huge number but its from 10-20 divided among the 4 province brigades , i have pormised to take photos myself when i go back next year as i know someone who knows few high officers in Peshemerga.

I once saw on tv myself once , when the Peshemerga was deployed to Diyala last year , to the disputed parts of Knahaqin (Jalawla and Sadyea) , the GKTV reporter was asking the commander Q's , then all of a sudden the soldiers behind him all looked up abruptly , and one of em in the background yelled "its ours" then they all looked backed down and chilled  , so they are operating them , they are the OH-58D Kiowa , and a few of them are kept at Erbil's old airport , where the police choppers are kept and serviced.

and this is an older pic and i know you seen it , its the Mi-17 but it is not iraqi there is no iraqi flag nor is it US one , has anyone seen it before ??? if this pic was not taken we would have never seen it, this chopper was carrying a Peshmerga ministry high official who attended a national ceremony in Halabja.

sheytan

what are your thoughts on Peshemrga getting trained up for Phalanxes ?

hint: Israel does already operate and possess them . and a high Peshie official announced few days ago : "the constitution does not specify what kind of heavy weaponry we can buy or have" , few days after they publish the article about been trained on these mega machinaries .

I can't see that pic unfortunately, there's a picture of a frog?

With regards to phalanxs? what do you mean? CIWS? these sort of weapons are designed mainly for naval warfare and they derive their advantage by having a clear horizon for the search and track system as well as the weapon to work on. Since they are "fully automated" they are designed primarily to engage high speed low altitude objects at short range.

it could be a defense system Pesh looking into possessing against Iran since they are backing Maliki's policies towards KRG and have pressured KRG into dealing with maniac Maliki..
