Barzani: We are not afraid of F16 jets

ERBIL, May 4 (AKnews)- Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani stated he does not fear the F16 fighter jets that Baghdad government is purchasing rather he fears that the blood of sons of Iraq is shed once again unjustly.

Barzani's statement was made during the first conference of the Arab Assembly for the Success of Kurdish Cause in Erbil. The two-day conference began today at the presence of 120 personalities from Iraq, the US, Australia, Lebanon, Canada and Egypt.

In his statement President Barzani first hoped the conference be successful, indicating the event is held while Iraq is undergoing a "very sensitive" phase.

He reminded the audience that on such a day in 1966 the then Iraqi regime used all the available weapons to attack Kurdistan where the blood of the Arab and Kurdish fighters, especially members of communist parties, mixed together in Ruwanduz.

In this war despite all its power the Iraqi army was defeated and crushed, Barzani said, and the victory was for Kurdistan nation, Iraqi nation and Kurdish and Arab fighters.

"Today also we hear some voices from here and there that they[ Iraqi army] want to attack Kurdistan, but you today in this conference want to counter these threats."

The subjects for the discussion in the conference include Kurds and Arabs inside the Arab countries, Kurd and Arab relations in the official national frame of Iraq and the assembly and its significance.

The Kurdish struggle for its rights in four parts of Kurdistan and political Islam are the other topics for presentation and discussion in the conference.

As for the settlement of the issues in Iraq, Barzani said "our strategy is clear; which is we have chosen forgiveness rather than retaliation.

"We demand that instead of threats and arms the issues be settled through dialog… We are not afraid of fighter jets and F16s but we fear that once again the blood of the sons of Iraq be shed unjustifiably.

Barzani voiced concerns over the "return of a culture which regards the language of canons and jets as the solution of issues."

Kurdistan president underlined the role intellectuals in settling democracy, federalism and pluralism in Kurdistan.

"We depend on your pens for defending the truth and pointing to it… for defending the rights of Kurds…. at the same time if we had a shortcoming [you should] notify us."

How many soldiers did the Peshmerga have? I mean only the Peshmega, not the Kurds in the Iraqi army.

An interesting thought has popped to my head . i remember few months ago , some Sheppard in Erbil district of Soran was saying he had seen some war plane hovering the valley with very low altitude , and he said it did not have any flag on it , usually the turkish and iranian ones have flags on them , then another man claimed to have seen the plane. When Peshmerga speaker Jabar Yawar, was asked in a press conference about this viewing of the plane he immediately refuted the reports saying "no war plane has trespassed Kurdistan's airspace as we have observers in the border areas of our region which usually spot out these incidents".

But maybe this plane did not even came from outside! , maybe it was an insider war plane been used for training !! , and since now iraq has claimed KRG has ceased war planes from Saddam era leftovers and that KRG has asked some countries to train their pilots .

i wonder if KRG does really have some old iraqi war planes and have restored em for training ! hmmm.

interesting article :

Jabar Yawar, General Director of the KRG's Ministry of Peshmerga, said in November 2009 that the Kurdish region's share in the Iraqi Army was now only 8.2 percent, whereas it should be 22 percent according to Region’s real population share. Kurdistan Region Minister of Peshmerga Affairs Sheikh Ja’far Mustafa said that there was a Iraqi Central Government political purpose behind the decision to close Qalachwalan and Zakho military colleges, which had been built largely with Kurdish funds. “The institutional government [ie: the KRG] should certainly possess a regular army, and this is a historical need to unify Peshmerga Such a regular army will help other security forces to provide the security for Kurdistan Region’s people,” Mustafa said. He said in November 2009 that there were negotiations to organize the Ministry of Peshmerga forces, and to form military units. “The last decision has been decreed concerning the existence of one unified Peshmerga Army under the [at least nominal] control of [Iraqi] Ministry of Defense. No army is allowed outside the control of the ministry’s rules.”

Minister Mustafa noted: “Due to the Iraqi Constitution, Kurdistan Region has its own military forces. Every region in Iraq is allowed to have its own potent armed forces. For that reason, the KRG can sign protocols with different companies in order to buy weapons that will be different from the Iraqi Army’s heavy weapons, because they have different duties. We will benefit from those countries that are similar to Kurdistan.”

I have seen choppers fly over our house in 2010, they are American-made and sounded like hell, could see machine guns and rocket pods, they flied about 2-3 times together... I have only heard jet planes in Dinarte region twice(I believe it's somewhere in Duhok, family were out to mountain areas.) I have also seen a tank loaded on a truck, but it was covered with a big sheet, this one was on the road between Hewler-Mosul or Duhok. Humvees are usual too, saw one in Hewler streets.

so basically the T-90 is the T-72 but with upgraded bits , i can see why KRG might be into buying these since they can upgrade them to T-90s down the track .

The T-90 is a Russian third-generation main battle tank that is a modernisation of the T-72 (it was originally to be called the T-72BU, later renamed to T-90). It is currently the most modern tank in service with the Russian Ground Forces and Naval Infantry. Although a development of the T-72, the T-90 uses a 125mm 2A46 smoothbore tank gun, 1G46 gunner sights, a new engine, and thermal sights. Standard protective measures include a blend of Steel, Composite armour, and Kontakt-5 explosive-reactive armor, laser warning receivers, Nakidka camouflage and the Shtora infrared ATGM jamming system.

Lets hope Kurdistan is not buying these old T72s. Even Iraq's BTR4s would make short work of these things (let alone the attack helicopters or M1s).

They would simply be "widow makers" for their crews. If the Peshmarga insist on not buying "heavy" armour, then I would invest in one line of standardised MRAPS and fit them with various turrets:

MRAP APC
MRAP Self-Propelled Artillery
MRAP Fire support vehicle with 105mm gun turret
MRAP fitted with long range anti-tank missiles.

Such a "family of vehicles" would give the Kurdish army:
-Commonality of parts and high-availability
-Rapid deployment ability (wheeled)
-Ability to "meet" enemy tanks at long range and using infantry from the vehicle to hold ground and clearance.

Buying some 30-35 year old tanks, which weren't particularly great when they were new! is simply a recipe for disaster! I'd bet all of Kurdistan's potential enemies would be chuckling at the amateurish approach of Kurdistan's fledgling conventional military (if this speculation is indeed true).

Guys, are there any pictures/videos that show kurdish BMP-1 or articles of the Tunguska-M1s? ive seen many people claim that we have those weapons. i think the BMP-1 could be true, since former iraqi army had alot of them. But i have never seen any proof of the M1s.
