Iran police fire on Kurdish protesters from chopper

Tehran, Iran, Aug. 03 – Iran’s State Security forces opened lethal fire on protesters in the western town of Saqqez from a military helicopter on Wednesday, eye-witnesses reported.

Anti-government protesters set fire to the town’s principal prayer hall and vehicles belonging to the police on Wednesday morning. Various government buildings including the governor’s office were also attacked and the commander of State Security Forces was beaten by protestors. A government agency, Bonyad Panzdah Khordad, was completely ransacked.

Witnesses reported that women took part in great numbers during today’s clashes with the security forces. One witness described how several women attacked policemen who had detained a teenage boy and freed him.

In Hahlou Square, protestors chanted “Down with Khamenei”, referring to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In an attempt to contain the unrest, agents of the SSF opened fire on protestors. There were reports of several people being killed by SSF gunfire. By early afternoon, at least 30 people had been arrested.

Today’s unrest in Saqqez started at Oqab Square just before noon as hundreds of protestors attacked a local Bassij post with sticks and stones. The Bassij are paramilitary Islamic vigilantes loyal to the Supreme Leader.

The latest clashes come in the wake of a series of protests that have swept Kurdish towns and cities in Iran for the past weeks. Dozens of protesters have been injured or arrested by government troops in several towns.

actually it does "Dayoko", remember the population of iraqi kurdistan is about 5 million, the other million kurds live elsewere in iraq. we have room for irani kurds, plus we are not talking about just the provinces controled by the regional government, but the Tassem kirkuk province, and the ninawah province.

Mosul... This is a silly idea... Why should THEY leave? Let the damn Persians, Ejems and the IRI leave... Kurdistan is for KURDS and not for them... To retreat would mean SURRENDER and KURDS NEVER SURRENDER!

What will you do when Eastern Kurdistan is given Federal status? Do like Kerkûk and say they were forced out? Not if they LEAVE by themselves... And we would loose both face and ground to the Ejems and Persians... Also the Arabs if the Kurds in Ilam, Luristan and Khuzestan move out...

the kurds in irani obviosuly are not getting anything. They are not part of the government in any way, and no theywill never get anutonomy with the government iran has right now. i am not saying that all kurds in iran come to iraq, but the ones that are constanly oppressed by the iranis.

American media tries not to report anything on any Kurds because it is not in their interest. If this thing continues, the world might actually be obligated to do something about it - and no one wants to do anything about it.

Heval yes - you are right...

The reason BBC, CNN or any other western News agencies aren't reacting to this is that the government doesn't allow them to ("Democracy" at it's best) - Because it is counter their interests to 1) try to talk Iran out of making nuclear wepons and 2) to keep the regiona stable because of the tribulations in Iraq...

So we can DREAM about support for the Eastern Kurds... But not even the UN (which act's on behalf of the US) has protested - and it is supposed to be the greatest implementer of Democracy...

We are always the victims when the West has more important things to think about... Like making good money from others disasters... Or diggin up oil where it is in largest quantities...

May God help the Eastern Kurds... And give them strenght to KEEP ON FIGHTING!

Exactly Diri! One question, sorry, where do you live again? Are there a lot of Kurds there? I know that demonstrations in Austrailia have already begun. I wonder if any of the other large Kurdish communities have started anything yet? Vladimir has a good point to target the smaller agencies to publish this stuff. I think as many letters and e-mails that can possibly be sent to any and all news agencies is worth a shot too.
