Interesting interview: ‘Kurds must support the AK Party'

PostAuthor: Vladimir » Mon Aug 15, 2005 2:05 pm

Hasim Hasimi -- a member of a highly respected Hashimi tribe, former mayor of Cizre and a former Diyarbakir deputy -- is still one of the leading figures among Kurdish-origin politicians. Former Prime Minister Tansu Ciller once proposed that he become a village guard, but he refused, and after he returned to Cizre he was detained. Nearly a dozen attempts have been made on his life, but he has survived.

Speaking of Prime Minister Erdogan's recent meeting with 12 Turkish intellectuals, Hasimi said: “If some Kurds had been there, it would have had better results. But anyway it's a positive first step.” Hasimi has called on Kurds to support the Justice and Development (AK) Party government, or at least not to make things difficult for it, claiming that Erdogan will find himself facing serious pressure. Below is our conversation with Hasimi:

'Interview: Kurds must support AK party'
The suppression of ethnic cultures and minority religious groups in attempting to forge a modern nation were not unique to Turkey but occurred in very similar ways in its European neighbours - Bruinessen.

Regular propaganda against the PKK. The Turkish government wants to divide the Kurdish people in North Kurdistan into PKK supporters (or DEHAP supporters) and AKP supporters.

Maybe they can "cut" the bad peice away then.

Hasim Hasimi seems like an educated man with a reasonable view, but i wouldnt go as far as him saying kurds should support the ak party. We need our own representatives who's only interest is the kurdish people and not some turkish islamist party who give the kurds a little more rights than their predecessors in the government have given us. Hasim forgets to mention that the ak party brings bad things too, like the abolition of secular laws. Too bad that Zana isnt independent, she could have managed a lot with her charisma. I had much hope in her when she was released from the prison.

She is starting a new party now. But it's clear a new Kurdish leader is needed in North-Kurdistan.
