silav, kardox! i hope you are well.

baran rizgar, from mêrdîn province, gives two words for "mother" in his kurmancî dictionary:

1. dê
2. dayik

in his book, dersên kurdî, in the first lesson, he includes "dê" as one of the vocabulary words. maybe he favors this word as more common.

These are correct...

But there are like all things in Kurdish - many names for "mother" in Kurdish also...

Dadê
Dayê
Yadê

Dayik
Day

Etc...

And in Dutch it's mamma.. ..
The suppression of ethnic cultures and minority religious groups in attempting to forge a modern nation were not unique to Turkey but occurred in very similar ways in its European neighbours - Bruinessen.

"maman" is french. the persians must have stolen the word.

Dîrî, your list makes me think of another song:

lê lê dayê cima ew derd û kulê dinyayê
hemî buyê para me ye
em bûne koçer, bûne reben, bela bûne
li dinyayê
ev dilê min dishewite dayê, helya de halê min
ji ber nemaye. . .

:P

kardox! did you ask us this just to get a tatoo????

wow cheryrl you know kurdish more than me ! it is amazing.

to Vladimir , and Cheryl .

Persian is a indo-eurpoean langauge,jsut as Kurdish

there are many many many many words common between eurpean langauges and kurdish and persian.

for example in krudish we call Daddy --> Tatty
in Persian , we call "Father" ---> Pedar. (do you see how simmilar?)
in persian and kurdish we call brother ---> baradar
in kurdish we call tomatoes --> tomatez
in persian we call Paradise --> Pardis
in persian we call MOther --> Madar
in persian we call Mommy --> Maman
Pesrian - kurdish and eurpean languages are relative

Cheryl is realy a Kurd... She is LYING TO US!

Dyako - no you are right... No expert...

"Tomatez" ??? What the...???

Kurdish words for the list above:

Father - Bab, Bav
Daddy - Babo
Brother - Bira
Tomato - Badimcana sor/Bacan sor
Paradise - Behesht
Mother - as stated in above posts!
Mommy - as stated in above posts!

And yes - they ARE relatives - but POLITICAL reasons (liek the friendship between France and Iran(the Shah) were reason enough in many cases to adpot words etc)... The word "Merci" which Persians use is French and so is Maman and other words that don't belong in Persian... That means 50 % is Arabic, 10 % Kurdish and rest Persian... WITH some French/European words...

Kardox - HEY MAN! That is VERY cute! So you are gonna tatoo "MAMA" on your arm? CUTE! Which one are you gonna use? "Dayê" is the most used one - and in Soranî Kurdish "Dadê" is widely used - in North Eastern Kurdistan and Southern - not sure about South Eastern though...
